This house resolution congratulates Pope Francis on his election and recognizes his inspirational statements and actions. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001. His papacy began on March 13th, 2013. Francis is the 266th Pope, and the first to be born outside of Europe.
