house Bill H. Res. 354

Condemning the Violence by Turkish Security Officials Against Peaceful Protesters in Washington D.C.

Argument in favor

Turkish officials went way over the line by attacking peaceful protesters who were demonstrating against Turkish President Erdogan during his visit to Washington D.C., and the House should formally put them on notice.

Certainly we should condemn and prosecute Turkey's Security Team. But alas, the State Department will surely look the other way. These thugs should be marked as persona non grata and placed on a terrorist list. Foreign Diplomatic Service have been notorious in violating our laws. From parking fines to murder or destroying personal property have been ignored for decades. The only way to slow this abuse would be taking retribution against the supporting State, Turkey, in this case. Deletion of foreign aid, travel restrictions or even trade restrictions. If the U.S. turns a blind eye to arrogant behavior, be prepared to get poked in the other eye. Wagging a scolding finger won't correct the problem.

Being a Turkish born citizen, what the security officers did was unacceptable. They should not be immune to such an act of violence, one that was especially committed on women. They should be barred from entering this country and tried in federal court. This is outrageous and a clear indication of the suppression of free democracy in Turkey

Argument opposed

As bad as the violence against peaceful protesters was, this is a toothless bill that wouldn’t accomplish anything as far as getting the Turkish government to avoid attacking those protesting it in the future.

I agree this is toothless. Better to take on our own police forces and their battering of our citizens. That would tell the world where we are, and what we're willing to do (lead by example).

Stop diplomatic immunity, make them pay the same taxes we all pay and obey the same laws or get the hell out of the Country and stay out.

Hold these people accountable. No one should be allowed in our country who attacks fellow Americans who have the given right to protest.

Any individual that physically harms our people should be punished; no matter their diplomatic status. We should go beyond a weak condemnation though, the guards attack our citizens in American jurisdiction

Foreign security forces attacking American citizens exercising their constitutional rights on American soil is a direct insult to everything this country was founded on.

No one should be exempt from respecting our constitutional rights on US soil. This is a disgrace and cannot be ignored. We must stand up to authoritarian regimes rather than welcome them and allow them to assault US citizens.

This was absolutely unforgivable. The Turkish government cannot be allowed to bring thugs into the USA, even under the auspices of diplomatic immunity.

Diplomats need to understand we have an expectation of them to respect our laws while being in our country. I do not think diplomats should be immune to laws of violence against another person.

This is pathetic, but better than nothing, I guess. These Turkish thugs should have been arrested & tried, then banned from the US. At the very least, the protesters' medical bills should be sent to the Turkish embassy for payment.

It is an outrage that a foreign government attacked American citizens on American soil. This kind of acts need to be condemned and prevented.

We cannot allow foreign dignitaries to enforce the worst of their practices on US soil. It should be condemned and there should be follow up to determine how this will be prevented in the future. Sanctions perhaps?
