house Bill H. Res. 271

Should the House Condemn the Trump Administration’s Efforts to Eliminate Obamacare?

Argument in favor

Ever since President Donald Trump was inaugurated, his administration and its Republican allies in Congress and statehouses across the country have been unrelenting in their efforts to undermine and repeal Obamacare. The House should go on record as calling for an end to attacks on Obamacare, even if it’s only a non-binding vote.

This isn’t any effort to help Americans get better healthcare. This is some whacked out vendetta by Trump to overturn everything Obama did. He has no replacement, he doesn’t care, he just wants it gone. Shame on him for hurting people for his own ego. And if it’s so damn bad, take the ACA away from our representatives NOW.

Every one should condemn the desire to destroy health care. It must be hard for the obscenely wealthy to imagine or care whether the rest of us live or die. Like Marie Antoinette, this corrupt Administration is tone deaf to the people who elected him and his incompetent immoral appointees. Fascism cut by cut.

Absolutely. The Affordable Care Act is law. Trump and his cronies have had years of complaining about the ACA and yet still have no viable alternative to propose. Their so called cheaper alternative is garbage- policies that you pay for and they then drop you the moment you make any claim upon it.

Argument opposed

It’s been clear that Obamacare was deeply flawed ever since millions of Americans lost their health insurance coverage when it took effect despite advocates’ promises they’d be able to keep them. Obamacare’s mandates have made the cost of health insurance unaffordable, and Republicans are right to try to repeal and replace it.

Not a fan of message bills. Pass bills that STRENGTHEN the US health care system - either fixing the ACA or replacing it with something that’s better. You politicians want to argue about whether it’s Obamacare or not. We the people don’t care. We just want access to good, affordable healthcare.

Obamacare is a large part of the reason that healthcare costs in the USA have skyrocketed. There is far more wrong with the ACA than right and the quicker it is totally abolished the faster the USA can recover from the damage already done to our healthcare system. The "mandate" that all persons be forced to buy a product was unconstitutional and even though that has been removed under the Trump Administration, that is not the only flaw and the whole ACA needs to be completely repealed.

What is House Bill H. Res. 271?

This resolution would condemn the Trump administration’s support of actions that would invalidate the Affordable Care Act’s (aka Obamacare) protections for people with pre-existing conditions and the entire ACA as “an unacceptable assault on the healthcare of the American people”. It’d also express the sense of the House that the Dept. of Justice (DOJ) should cease any and all efforts to “destroy Americans’ access to affordable healthcare”, in particular by reversing its position in the ongoing Texas v. U.S. litigation. The resolution would also call on the DOJ to protect individuals with pre-existing conditions, seniors struggling with high prescription drug costs, and the millions of Americans “who newly gained health insurance coverage since 2014”.

As a simple resolution, this legislation is non-binding and wouldn’t advance beyond the House if passed.

Impact

The Trump administration; the House of Representatives; and Obamacare.

Cost of House Bill H. Res. 271

As a non-binding resolution, this legislation would have no cost.

More Information

In-Depth: Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) introduced this resolution to condemn the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate Obamacare:

“Americans are facing higher healthcare costs than ever, but this administration’s lawsuit would drive up prices and put coverage out of reach for thousands of Texas families. I came to Washington to get things done, and I’ll work with anyone to lower costs and defend protections for those with pre-existing conditions. I’m proud to the lead this resolution and to assure Americans that this Congress will not allow people with pre-existing conditions to go back to the days where they could be thrown off their healthcare just because they got sick.”

The Trump administration Dept. of Justice announced that it will support a district court ruling in Texas v. U.S. which found that Obamacare is unconstitutional as the case makes its way through the appeals process. The ruling held that because the tax for not complying with the individual mandate was eliminated by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the individual mandate itself is unconstitutional. Because the mandate is “essential” to and inseverable from the ACA, the judge ruled that the entire law is invalid. An appeal in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is underway, and the new House Democratic majority adopted a rules package that allows it to intervene in defense of Obamacare as the appeals process plays out.

Fix the problems with ACA rather than wasting time trying to repeal it. Especially when the GOP has no idea about a replacement.

Sustainable solutions, not angry procedures. Just because you may disagree with this legislation does not mean that there are grounds to leave millions without health protections. THIS IS A HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION, and demands us to address this in a fair and just manner.

We shouldn’t be pleased and happy to throw millions of people off their health insurance. What kind of Christians are you people? “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”

This administration is trying to throw millions of people off their insurance. Before Obamacare, a Harvard study found that 45,000 people die each year due to a lack of coverage and the GOP and this administration want to bring us back to those days. Trump is literally a threat to people’s lives. He should be impeached for that alone!

Trump has NO PLAN, nor do the Republicans. Trump is a petulant Idiot. Republicans have tried endlessly for the past 10+ years to come up with a healthcare plan, any plan! & have FAILED EVERY TIME. They can’t protect both their lobbied interests & the American people’s health, so no plan. Trump, in his 5th grade mentality, is simply trying to rub out Obama’s name from history, regarding any & all achievements.

The only reason the House of Representatives could support this attempt to repeal the ACA would be a complete disregard for the Constitution. The enumerated powers delegated to Congress are few and defined. The ACA should never have been passed into law. Congress has no authority given to them to do this. That makes the ACA an unconstitutional law. For those that want to argue that Congress was covered under the general Welfare clause, you should go back and reread Article 1, Section 8 again. Then look up the definition of general Welfare as used by the founders at the time the Constitution was drafted. It limited the government, rather than granting them broad powers, which would have made the enumeration of powers meaningless.

Remove the socialist Obamacare legislation! It harmed many to help a few. We need free market insurance not government interference insurance. This is not the government’s job!

Thanks to the ACA, people with pre existing conditions are covered. When this bill passed, it was to be cheaper and you were supposed to keep your doctor, but, due to the greed of the insurance companies, that didn't happen for all. Young people were supposed to sign up for insurance, which would have offset a lot if the costs, but they did not do that. Until someone comes out with a better plan, we need this one!!

The ACA was and is unconstitutional! Don’t insult my intelligence by saying it is constitutional! The Supreme Court cannot legislate from the bench and that is what they did! You cannot force people to buy insurance! The bill was presented to the Supreme Court as NOT a tax and should have been sent back to Congress but the Supreme Court legislated from the bench and made it a tax so they could approve it! This is Unconstitutional to the MAX!

If Obama Care worked we wouldn’t still be talking about. The Democrats would not be running campaigns on single payer insurance. Obama Care is a disaster compared to any advantages for a small percent of the population.

Obamacare is a socialist boondoggle that will bankrupt our nation. I am sure President Trump has a far better idea; as all of his ideas have been winners for the country so far. Please stay the course in ridding our country of unnecessary socialist laws and policies. Thank you
