house Bill H. Res. 132

Should NAFTA be Renegotiated On Better Terms for the U.S.?

Argument in favor

NAFTA has disadvantaged American workers, and unless the U.S. can renegotiate the deal with Canada and Mexico on more favorable terms it should give serious consideration to leaving the trade partnership.

Negotiated, but not withdrawn and don't threaten our neighbors either.

If a fair deal cannot be reached we should withdraw, our country has suffered jobs and security for too long under this and we need it fixed or leave!

Argument opposed

NAFTA isn’t perfect, and good could come of renegotiating it on more favorable terms for American workers, but threatening to abandon NAFTA altogether makes a new deal with Canada and Mexico less likely.

I don't want this president getting any more authority to change anything. The Russia investigation needs to be completed! The evidence against members of his cabinet, his family and himself seems to grow each day. None of them should be allowed to be involved in our government until this is clearer up. If we find out that the evidence proves they broke the law and colluded with a foreign government do we get to undo everything they did?

On face value this bill looks good, but having a clause stating that we would pull out of the current one if we can not get everything listed on this one is telling our allies that it is our way or the highway. That will turn our allies into enemies.

I know the President wants to try and renegotiate, if he does, I hope it benefits us! No more free trade if it weakens our sovereignty!

Erase NAFTA altogether and replace it with true free trade. No tariffs, taxes, or fees charged on any goods crossing any borders.

The current administration seems unable to negotiate resolutions within our own country. I do not have confidence in this administration to successfully negotiate trade agreements at this time. I recommend holding on this resolution until confidence can be restored or a new administration is voted in.

The world changes and our treaties should change with it, same as the Constitution. However, it needs to be done in a thoughtful and cooperative way.

NAFTA is an agreement made over 20 years ago when AOL was a revolutionary company and the internet was in its infancy. If the Trump Administration focuses on updating the agreement to the mutual benefit of all 3 countries while bringing the agreement up to date with the new reality that the internet presents our economy with, I will support his efforts. If, however, he turns this into a gambit to try to isolate the US from our neighbors through tariffs and walls, I will change my vote.
