Should Congress Officially Support Vaccinations?

Argument in favor

The anti-vaccination movement is growing increasingly powerful, with increasingly dangerous results. It is critical that Congress shows its disapproval.

"I understand that there are families that in some cases are concerned about the effect of vaccinations... The science is, you know, pretty indisputable. We've looked at this again and again. There is every reason to get vaccinated, but there aren't reasons to not." [politifact.com]

"I think obviously vaccinations work. Vaccination has worked for many, many years... I am sensitive to the fact that there are some families who disagree but the difficulty is if I have a kid who is suffering from an illness who is subjected to a kid who walks into a room without vaccines that could kill that child and that’s wrong." These official resolutions and declarations don't usually make a difference, but it can't (really) hurt. For the record, vaccinations are important. The whole "certain vaccinations can cause autism" theory was debunked a while ago. And even if they did cause autism, would you really rather die of a preventable disease than to have autism?

Argument opposed

Hey, people should be able to medicate their kids as they see fit. Besides, with Congress’s low approval rating, it’s not like this would do much to help the pro-vaccine argument.

Let the people decide. The second the government gives blanket support for vaccines is the day that a very harmful one comes out.

The anti-vaccination crowd is made up of deluded fools. Not that Congress's opinion counts for much, but at least they should be on record on the right side of science for this one.

The government has no guarantee that these artificial compounds will not affect the human immune system. The drug companies love for the government to help them make money.

When you are properly immunized you have done your part in protecting the rest of your community. And the benefits you recieve are also important. It's benefits far out way any perceived consequences.

How stupid! Everyone already knows that the government supports vaccinations! Heck, I imagine that a lot of people are wondering how many politicians have been bought and paid for by Big Pharma. Do you honestly think it's going to make any difference if Congress makes their support "official"?! And while I'm at it, if politicians want my support and my VOTES, they'd better start FIGHTING FOR MY RIGHTS! PRESERVE, PROTECT AND DEFEND THE U.S. CONSTITUTION! I know y'all have lobbyists pulling you this way and that, but if you don't take a strong stand for the Bill of Rights, I'm going to work like mad to try to get you "retired"!

Big Pharma would never say you need less shots or that they're bad for you, or possibly harmful. It's a business just like any other.

Vaccines harm and/kill people AND pets! It should be a choice for both and not mandated by the government. Here we go again with Agenda 21! I wonder if congress and Nobama get vaccinated?!?!

Let the people and parents make an informed decision on what goes into their and children's bodies. It's our right! Medicine is not a one size fits all and our government or schools should NOT interfere with medical decisions!

People should have the freedom of choice in what they allow into their bodies. I aways find it interesting how your average liberal screams at the top of their lungs how they demand freedom of choice for their bodies, but they are also the first to demand that choice be stripped away when it comes to the chemicals being forced unto people's bodies.

Which vaccinations? Flu, anthrax, smallpox? Anything that big pharma wants to say is necessary? Doctors and patients can decide what is necessary - and until the broken VAERS reporting system is fixed, there is no rational way to make the case that Congress can make an informed decision.
