simple resolution Progress

  • The house has not voted
    IntroducedNovember 16th, 2018

What is it?

This resolution would recognize that the U.S.-South Korea alliance serves as a linchpin of regional and bilateral security that’s exemplified by deep diplomatic, economic, military, and cultural ties between the two republics. It would also emphasize that beyond regional peace and security the alliance is an exemplar of democratic values, free market principles, commitment to universal human rights, and the rule of law. Additionally, it would reaffirm that the U.S. will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with South Korea regardless of the outcome of any negotiations with North Korea and will continue applying the pressure needed to peacefully end the rogue nation’s nuclear weapons program.

As a simple resolution, this legislation is non-binding and wouldn’t advance beyond the House if passed.

Impact

The House of Representatives; and South Korea.

Cost

A CBO cost estimate is unavailable.

More Information

In-DepthThis legislation was introduced by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) with the support of three cosponsors, Reps. Sam Johnson (R-TX), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Ted Yoho (R-FL).

Official Title

Recognizing that the United States-Republic of Korea alliance serves as a linchpin of regional stability and bilateral security, and exemplifies the broad and deep military, diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties shared between the United States and the Republic of Korea.

By all means yes..... I’m in full support of the resolution which would recognize that the U.S.-South Korea alliance serves as a linchpin of regional and bilateral security that’s exemplified by deep diplomatic, economic, military, and cultural ties between the two republics. It would also emphasize that beyond regional peace and security the alliance is of extreme importance and should be passed. SneakyPete..... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. 12*4*18........

Feel good fluff that doesn’t do anything. This “legislation” doesn’t change anything, propose anything, or accomplish anything. It’s a total waste of time. We have treaties to define our relationships with countries. Do something that matters. Address immigration, climate change, the budget. DO SOMETHING USEFUL.

South Korea is indeed one of our closest allies, and there is nothing wrong with Congress expressing our resolve and position.

We should emphasize the importance of our alliances with all allies, rather than the dictatorships that Trump loves so much.

More useless resolutions with no teeth to them that allow our representatives to pretend that they’re actually getting work done.

It is important to national security. Which means everyone knows this except #45.

in this case I have to agree that relationship is not going to be strengthened with a non binding vote. Time would be better spent backing and showing unwavering support for Israel .

Another piece of legislation that is a waste of time. What says the US supports South Korea more, a symbolic vote in Congress or the continued presence of thousands of troops based there???

Sure, why not? With luck, this bill restates the obvious, but Trump obviously needs to have the obvious restated frequently since he has the short term memory of a gnat.

We complain about it being hard to pass legislation because Congress is so partisan, but wasting time with things like this definitely doesn't help. We need to work on actually important legislation.

The House should, if only to reinforce to South Korea and US that we have a important relationship.

With this president, our friends need all the reassurance they can get that the United States will live up to its commitments.

Anything that would slow down President Trump's " friendship" with the tyrannical regime in North Korea is a good thing. Why does the President embrace anti- American tyrannies all over the world, and insult our allies and trading partners?
