house Bill H. Res. 109

Should the House Call for a 'Green New Deal' to Fight Climate Change and Income Inequality?

Argument in favor

Climate change and income inequality are two of the greatest threats facing America. Enacting a massive transformation of our society like this Green New Deal is the best way to achieve that, not only through cutting emissions, investing in clean energy, and upgrading infrastructure but by guaranteeing economic security for all Americans — particularly those from vulnerable communities. This may be a non-binding resolution, but its passage would be a positive step toward the realization of a Green New Deal.

Climate change is real and needs to be addressed. We need clean, renewable energy. There is no time to waste.

We as a country should strive to make our environment one that is safe for all. The jobs this endeavour would create would be significant. As far as wages are concerned if people were paid according to how hard they work our pay scale would probably be turned upside down. Everyone should receive a living wage at the least.

Climate change is real. Just look at what happened with the polar vortex dip this past week. Think of the jet streams as a rubber band holding some watermelons (low pressure cold snaps) back. If you heat the rubber band, it weakens and the watermelons dip out of the rubber band. We must work to keep the jet stream strong by reducing our carbon footprint.

Argument opposed

The Green New Deal suggested by this resolution is a massive transformation of our society that comes with tremendous costs. It sets unrealistic goals like eliminating all energy derived from fossil fuel & nuclear power while upgrading or replacing every building in America over the course of a decade. And it goes well beyond environmental policies by calling for guaranteed “economic security for those willing or unwilling to work.” Alternatively, this bill is non-binding and wouldn’t make any real progress in achieving its stated goals.

Absolutely not. This is a blueprint for disaster. This is socialism wrapped in climate change with a green bow. Paying people who are “unwilling to work” and taxing the wealthy 70% once they reach a set amount of earnings will result in a population that doesn’t strive for success. It will be the death of American innovation.

If you want to fight income inequality then go get a higher-paying job; write your own success story.

The green new deal would totally destroy our economy and our country. We are not a socialist country. It is simply a power grab. We need smaller government and more freedom. Income inequality is not something that the government should be involved in. Let the free market work those things out. Government involvement will cause more damage than help.

If we did everything in the False New Deal, it would do nothing to the climate & the IPCC estimated that if America was at 0 emissions, it would lower the global temp. about 0.2 degrees Celsius in 100 years. The majority of emmisions are from countries like China & India & they have no interest in lowering emissions. & income inequality...hahaha

I have read through the Green New Deal proposed by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, as well as the FAQ released to NPR. It looks like something my nine year old daughter could have done better. Normally, I try to respond to proposals in my areas of interest with respect and thoughtfulness, but I actually think that reading this proposal has killed brain cells. It is the most ridiculous piece of proposed legislation I have ever seen. There is seriously nothing I can say other than that the people endorsing this are just absolutely, completely bat-guano crazy! I know of no other way to respond!

The USSR had a new deal of income equality and look how it turned out, and Venezuela tried the same new deal recently and look how it turned out, ask anyone who has lived under these new deals (and survived) if they think it’s a good idea. And they have been lying to us for decades about the eminent death of the planet nothing new there.

The Green New Deal is perhaps the most infeasible proposal I have ever seen. When broken down by costs, the estimated annual total is about $3.6 trillion, almost 1/3 of the US GDP and 3x the revenue yielded by taxpayers. Besides, it lacks in qualitative, fact based steps to completing its goals and is shrouded in ambiguity.

A “green new deal”? No. This entire world view represents the very zenith of mental illness. I thought AOC was a socialist. Turns out she is a full on idiot.
