Should the Feds Fund School Resource Officers in K-12 Schools?

Argument in favor

School resource officers help make schools safer by maintaining calm learning environments through deterring acts of violence and standing ready to respond should something transpire. Funding the DOJ’s COPS program, which helps local law enforcement hire SROs, will put these valuable resources into more schools.

Hell yes. It’s not only for safety, it’s for peace of mind. When the bad guys know that there are people with guns in an area they avoid these areas. The thing that we all cannot see is how many situations that guns saved people.

They can receive firearms and other training to help protect during and see the signs leading up to and prevent school shootings. The training can be the same for all officers nationwide and come from Secret Service or the FBI.

Clearly the GUN Nuts are a big problem. They can’t police themselves and they’re killing mass #’s of people everyday. NO OTHER COUNTRY HAS THIS PROBLEM. We just have a bad bunch. Not all are bad, hell, I’m a Gun owner, but I don’t fondle it, kiss it, dream about it or polish it every night. We have an epidemic. I don’t care what a single one of them say. Collect ALL ASSAULT WEAPONS. Arrange Visa’s for those that must fondle, kiss, Dream, & Polish! Get them the f-ck out of our COUNTRY! HOW MANY HAVE TO DIE! You stupid republican greedy ass Bastards are afraid like little Babies of the NRA. If you don’t have other donors, that’s on your stupid Ass. Hand in your assault rifles or leave. Pay to get them out of here, but get these Nut jobs out of here! I had 1 dumb Nut Job send me a pic of the Towers Falling and quoted “they couldn’t even protect us from this!” Well you could’ve shot at those 767’s all day long and that little gun of yours wouldn’t do you a damn bit of good. DO SOMETHING! 93% of Americans want GUN LAWS CHANGED! Quit PANDERING TO THE IDIOTS & THE NRA

Argument opposed

School resource officers make schools less safe for students of color, who are more likely to have negative interactions — including being arrested by — these officers. Rather than militarizing schools and treating students as potential criminals, we should spend money on mental health resources to support students.

How about we give it to the teachers for their classrooms? Or the schools for new playground equipment? I can think of literally 100 better things in schools to spend the money on then turning our schools into militarized prisons.

No. They really ought to try funding education first. They aren’t doing such a hot job at that, before they militarize school campuses. Or maybe they could work on gun laws so “resource officers” aren’t necessary. Add counselors and mental health resources.

There’s no reason to have police officers in our schools. This only helps further drive the school-to-prison pipeline. How about we use this money to raise teachers’ salaries!

The insanity that is our lax gun policy has created one harebrained solution after another. People who have easy access to all kinds of guns and tons of ammunition sometimes shoot people. Sometimes a lot of people. Sometimes they shoot themselves. And we can never know in advance in every case just whom those pathetic souls might turn out to be. If we follow the example of both Australia and New Zealand we would dramatically decrease the number of homicides and suicides by firearms. Look at those two countries, (particularly Australia which has a track record to point to since they curtailed gun sales and banned automatic weapons and high capacity magazines in 1996), and see what limited access to firearms can do to preserve and protect life. Here in the states we terrify little kids with active shooter drills and arm churches and schools as though they were military camps. Guns in the hands of disaffected people kill people. The problem is guns. Disaffected people are everywhere, but only here are they so easily able to arm themselves to the teeth and create havoc. Think of all the people who would still be alive if we had followed Australia’s lead. Think about that for a minute or two. Don’t take any more money from the NRA.

Not at the federal level. The school districts can make that decision based on the voices of the parents. If the state wants to develop and offer a training program, that’s fine.

We NEED nurses and COUNSELORS, Not cops! Quit creating a prison pipeline. The pattern is deplorable and destructive.

Schools are becoming more like prisons only the kids go home at the end of the day. The teachers need more funding because they have to buy supplies out of pocket and now they can’t even write it off. Instead of reaching troubled kids, cops or a school resource officer get called in and a kid gets thrown and cuffed, especially minorities. The school resource officer didn’t even stop the parkland shooting he was too scared to go in. Why go they need more money? They need to fund teachers and have a trained person to come and talk to a troubled kid instead of a big bulky guy with a gun throwing them like its WWE. You have a person trained to deal with bullying and small incidents you can probably prevent them from needing police intervention later on.

If there is enough money to pay resource officers $166,000 then increase teacher pay and decrease classroom size instead. Treat our children like students and contributing citizens instead of like potential inmates.

Before secular liberals took over our school system, there was no gun violence in schools. When schools had a Biblical Foundation and ran by local parent groups, our classrooms were safe and scores were the best. Go back 120 years when our education system was the best, and duplicate what was happening then. That will restore our education system to greatness again. Forget these intellectuals who are trying to indoctrinate children with their liberal, secular, progressive poison.

I want safe schools, but I don’t like the trend, in place for some time, of making our schools look increasingly like prisons.

I think if the vets pass a debrief and a psych evaluation upon returning from service then they should be given first crack at these positions. I know I’d feel much better about my child’s safety if there was a former armed soldier patrolling my little girls school than a Broward County sheriffs deputy who ran and hid and let teenagers get ripped apart. A military man would’ve found this piece of garbage taken his weapon and either eliminated the threat personally, or detained him on site, not 200 yards from my house!!!!! The Douglas shooting happened in my neighborhood, my neighbors kids go there. they were there that day. They had to hide and pray they weren’t the next room to be shot up. Security at the school is still a joke and the news isn’t here anymore cause they’re too concerned about bob muellers report and if trump is a Russian mole. LIKE MY TAKE? GIVE ME A FOLLOW

Instead of making more guns surround our children, why don't we deal with the actually probably of guns. Basically anyone can get a gun and having more guns be in proximity to our children only reinforces the school-to-prison pipeline that disproportionately affects students of minority

No, let’s fund education in this country. It is very poor and often teachers have to use their own money for upgrades.

Why don’t we add barbed wire and machine gun nests while we’re at it? If we focused on education, relieving poverty, and providing hope resource officers would not be necessary.

How about giving all the tax money dedicated to education back to public schools. Investment in education is investment in the community, not in individual students. No more tax money to religious, private, home, or charter schools. When students are well educated the entire community does better.
