Should Certain Conditions in Syria be Met Before U.S. Troops are Withdrawn?

Argument in favor

A troop drawdown from Syria needs to be carefully considered. Given President Donald Trump’s rash announcement of plans to reduce troop levels in the country without adequate preparation in late 2018, and the recent troop movements after Turkey’s incursion in Syria, it’s important to put guardrails in place to prevent the president from acting unilaterally.

We should never have done this to the Kurds. They were are allies and you all let trump just run all over them. And the reason why is his real estate there in Turkey. My god are you even human anymore shame on all of you

Yes, certain conditions should have been met before we allowed the Kurds to be attacked! Here’s a condition: stop allowing this president, under investigation for foreign interference, to unilaterally make decisions about starting/stopping military actions. The world is watching! Right now the USA cannot be trusted! Stop him!

While this bill could set a precedent that hinders the administration from making tactical decisions, it is needed in this case. trump's immediate actions which surprised our own national security specialists, our allies and the world cannot be tolerated. It is yet another blatant abuse of the broad authorities granted to the President who is expected to act responsibly in protecting our interests. This smells like another quid pro quo with Turkey to protect his private real estate interests. Why else would such actions be taken without any counsel from government officials knowledgeable of the Kurdish situation and assurances that the United States has given them. It is irresponsible behavior and violation of trump's oath of office and is yet another impeachable offense.

Argument opposed

Any effort to prohibit the president, who is the military’s commander-in-chief, from making decisions on troop deployments is likely unconstitutional unconstitutional. Modern presidents have asserted broad war powers, including over troop deployments and overseas conflicts, so it’s not clear courts would uphold this bill if enacted.

Unfortunately, imo, we do not belong there. President Trump is doing the right thing by withdrawing our troops. We don’t need to be there or Afghanistan. We need out of both countries now.

https://www.congress.gov/116/bills/hr914/BILLS-116hr914ih.pdf READ THE ACTUAL BILL. The statement conditions are ridiculous and impossible. Trying to keep us in another “Forever War”? I’m out. Even if I disapprove of everything Trump and think this is going to be a disaster, it is EVEN MORE STUPID to hamstring our outcomes with utterly impossible directives. Basically asking for a perfectly predictable future? No effing way.

Trump is not fit to be Commander in Chief. Yesterday he spouted some complete falsehood about the Kurds during World War II (which was, you know, almost 80 years ago now...hold a grudge?). This is rich considering that he and his family never served this country in any war of the 20th Century. The Kurds are braver and more patriotic and loyal than the Trumps will ever be, so how dare he? We need to protect our allies and do our best to secure these ISIS prisoners, who may escape and endanger us all. This is more reason that the ability to wage and continue war must be approved by Congress, not unilaterally decided by any president.

We have completed showing our allies that we are no longer reliable. Congress should step in and move our military back in place to repel the Turks. The Kurds are strong allies that continued to support us until we pulled the carpet out from under them. It is a sad day to be an American...

An irresponsible withdrawal from Syria would accomplish nothing except to allow the resurgence of ISIS and other terrorist groups as well as a possible genocide of the Kurds, not to mention making the instability of the region worse. Trump should have nothing to do with this decision. He has no military experience, but, most of all, he knows absolutely nothing about regional or global affairs, not to mention history. His incompetentcy must not be allowed to influence such a critical decision.

A hundred Kurds have been killed in the past day, to add to the ten thousand who already sacrificed their lives for this cause! Donald Trump and Turkey aren't interested in "conditions."

We helped make this mess. Withdrawing troops abruptly will only bring more harm to the people living in Syria. Doing so would reverse all the efforts of our service people working there. That is a disheartening result for us and those we have been trying to help. Although there are many complicated issues going on with Syria, Turkey, Russia, Kurdish peoples, and others affected by ISIS, the most important thing is to act in ways that support the safety and welfare of people living in the area.

The president’s decision shows that he clearly does not grasp the meticulous nuances of what is happening in Syria. Worse, based on his daughter’s Tweet, it’s looking like the only reason he did withdraw American troops, is because he has a business opportunity to build Trump Tower Istanbul. This just the latest in a whole string of decisions that make it apparent that the president is using his office to advance his own brand name.

Yes, the essential condition being that both parties start placing the removal of a Russian asset above all else. Including the specter of a potential of lost seats. This impeachment inquiry must solely be focused on what is good for the nation and the restoration of our national security. Nothing more.

TOO LATE. Our allies are being slaughtered because we have an idiot for president. And he says ISIS fighters if they are released from prison will go to Europe and that is not our problem. How long does he think it will be before they are here? REPUBLICANS—- GET RID OF THIS PRESIDENT. He is ruining our country. WHO IS ADVISING THIS DISGRACE TO OUR COUNTRY?
