In-Depth: Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) introduced this bill to give federal civilian employees a pay raise of 2.6% percent for 2019:
“Federal employees have dedicated their lives and careers in service to the American people. Yet far too often their sacrifice and dedication go unappreciated, met instead with insult and vitriol from the Oval Office. We must provide the entire federal workforce with a pay increase worthy of their selfless commitment to the betterment of the American public. The Federal Civilian Workforce Pay Raise Fairness Act reaffirms our conviction that public servants - civilian an d military alike - deserve better than the shutdowns, furloughs, and pay freezes forced upon them by the Trump administration.”
In December 2018, President Donald Trump followed through on a plan detailed in March by announcing a pay freeze for federal civilian employees in 2019.
This legislation has the support of nine original cosponsors, all of whom are Democrats representing districts near Washington D.C.

There’s no money to give raises to employees to keep up with the cost of living, but mention a WALL and suddenly billions and billions of dollars magically appear. Isn’t that something.
We are 20T in debt, we need to be laying off entire departments. Reduce government while the economy is good and workers can find other jobs.

As a federal worker I actually can't offer competitive wages to people in my industry (mining engineering). Therefore I am forced to recruit from lower tier candidate pools and ultimately am forced to hire them. Equalizing wage disparity with the private sector would help recruit better qualified personnel.
Yes. It’s a cost of living adjustment to keep up with inflation and rising costs. It’s not a raise. The government already has a problem with brain drain caused by good employees jumping ship to the private sector for better wages, and as a result, national security suffers. The government has its flaws but it is essential to a safe and functional democracy.
The average compensation package is $120,000 for government workers. No raise, also this was introduced by a Democrat from Virginia, he is just buying votes with taxpayers pockets.
How can the federal employees be victims of pay freezes and the wealthy get a tax break? Disgusting!
Unless you have worked as a federal CONTRACTOR you will never be able to comprehend the uselessness of the majority of federal civilian employees.
1. It is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to fire a redraw employee for any reason whatsoever.
2. They have ABSOLUTELY NO incentive to do their job at all let alone to do it with any sense of integrity, work ethic or sense of responsibility. Because they are only promoted by time in grade and never promoted based on their performance.
3. The amount of actual work done by a federal employee who is in the office 40 hours a week is (and this is generous) probably 10-12 hours out of the 40.
4. Time card fraud is the rule NOT the exception. No one is ever called out for it (even though it IS a federal crime and can result in time in federal prison) because they ALL do it from entry level to upper management. Arrive at the office at 9, take lunch from 12-1:30 and leave for the day at 3. 4.5 “work” hours but 8 hours on the time card.
Soooooo, NO PAY INCREASE FOR ANY FEDERAL EMPLOYEES IN 2019!!!!
I support this, but we also need to start having major discussions about increasing wages for the average working people.
Absolutely not. Want a raise? Go work in the private sector. We are 20 Trillion in debt. All money should be funneled to keep us safe and paying down our debt which makes us vulnerable.
Why would civil service employees NOT get a cost-of-living increase, as usual? The larger question is, why would Trump punish public servants?
It’s really sad to see middle class people on this site actually say other middle class people should not get a pay raise or that they need to be laid off because of the deficit. How much could we save if congress didn’t get retirement pay and medical care for life after serving only 1 term? Or collecting pay while out campaigning for higher office? How fast would government shutdowns end if congress didn’t get paid during the shutdown? How quickly we forget that the Trump tax cut for the wealthy just added 1.7 Trillion to the deficit or how we spent over a 4 Trillion on the Iraq war under false pretenses. We should have been fighting Saudi Arabia over 9-11. Chaney saw a way to steal Iraqi oil and get rich using his company Blackwater as “Contractors” and Bush wanted retaliation for his father. Or the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. If it weren’t for those things Clinton left the Country with a budget surplus. Then they blamed Obama for doubling the deficit which although technically true most of that happened due to the increased interest we had to start paying for the debt from the Bush years, the increase of Baby Boomer retirements, the collapse of the economy leaving millions unemployed to need government assistance while not paying taxes during the months of being laid off. Then there was a huge increase in the number of natural disasters like hurricanes, oil spills, floods, fires, in the first 10 months of 2011 there were 89 natural disasters. The startup of the ACA was expensive but was anticipated by the GAO to begin saving trillions of dollars until the republican led house took over and short of repealing the law began dismantling the provisions necessary for its success leading to the higher premiums and millions more uninsured today. The Top 1/10th of 1% own 80% of the wealth. The Top 1% own more then 90% of the wealth. Leaving 99% to compete for the remaining 7-9%. Is it any wonder poverty is rising, our infrastructure is crumbling, middle class wages have been flat for the last 40 years. We are making more money than our parents did but our parents income had greater spending power. The problem is not giving 2% raises to middle class people the problem is that the wealthy are paying a far smaller percentage of their wealth than we are and are not creating the kinds of good jobs Republican economics have promised and the middle class needs to get ahead. sure the economy is good right now and unemployment is low. But ask yourself, are you doing better, is this economy having a significant effect on your family? I guarantee that for the majority the answer is no.
Yes, they should get their raise. They can take it from Trump’s wealthy cabinet members who got a $10,000 raise. This country is upside down. The rich get richer. The poor get poorer, and the middle class gets squeezed out altogether.
It’s a cost of living adjustment. Perhaps if we taxed corporate entities and the super rich properly, then we could not have stupid conversations about things like this.
Less government in our lives, not more. This will just make taxes go up
