house Bill H.R. 748

Economic Relief for Individuals & Families, Small Businesses, Distressed Sectors of the U.S. Economy, and Hospitals Amid the Coronavirus Crisis

Argument in favor

No compromise legislation is perfect, but this bill provides Americans with timely relief from the coronavirus crisis by providing individuals & families with recovery rebate checks, expanding unemployment benefits, and extending forgivable loans to small businesses so that they cover payroll & retain employees. It also extends loans to larger businesses in sectors of the economy hit hard by COVID-19 shutdowns that must be repaid & have stringent oversight, bolsters the healthcare response to the crisis, and gives states resources to address the crisis.

Yes, it is needed. The sequestering of our population will likely have to extend past Easter. We have to keep people home for awhile longer, at least until the daily mortality counts show a statistically significant sustained reduction. I do not care what is in trumps dreamscape. The Congress cannot let stupid decisions increase the casualties already occurring because of prior stupid decisions. … … … This legislation is needed now. It is not all that it should be, but it is a lot fairer to our population generally than it was. Do it now. Make corrections as needed if, for example, trump finally actually uses the Defense Production Authority to nationalize the medical device, supplies and pharmaceutical supply chains to stop the current bidding wars by States and even foreign governments. COVID19 is a generational national emergency and our medical response demands a national strategy, strategic guidance, directives and actions which are much more urgent now than just patching up the economy. Without apolitical national pandemic leadership, it will be very difficult to control this pandemic. The Federal government needs to mandate all states compliance with population sequestering, mandate the production of needed resources, manage their distribution with clear quantities and delivery dates, plan ahead for contingencies, institute a national testing program to identify developing new hot spots to begin to proactively contain the spread as well as provide real-time fact based results to all of us- without political spin or withholding of information. Our people will be willing to sacrifice and do what is necessary if they have access to timely and honest information.

Argument opposed

This bill goes too far in extending financial aid to small businesses and large corporations that have been harmed by the coronavirus crisis. It doesn’t do enough to help low-income individuals & families deal with the financial costs of the ongoing national struggle against the coronavirus. Alternatively, recovery checks for Americans shouldn’t be means-tested as people’s income from 2019 or 2018 may not reflect their income this year. This bill has too many pet projects from both sides of the aisle tucked into it.

Too much of our economic system and tax system are structured to benefit the wealthy, giving them hidden subsidies. We need to have ways of providing support for all of our people, especially in the areas of health care, education, and housing. In this case, this tax is one way to generate funds to support needed services for those who are not wealthy. Until we are ready to responsibly overhaul our whole system, we will need small steps like this. Taking this tax away is just one more way to, piece-by-piece, destroy a program that has produced some significant benefits. While ACA is far from perfect, it has made a difference for many, many people. Let's continue to support it, as is, and work to make the larger system more fair and just.

Over a period of time (10 to 20 years), we need to phase out for profit insurance plans and funnel that money directly into our health system. This tax is a step in that direction.

Yes, Let’s get rid of Health Insurance altogether. It is nothing more than a scheme to take money and make people wealthy and make the wealthy even more wealthy. Provide Universal healthcare that literally covers everything, including ER, Ambulance, Medicine, Dental everything and Vision and hearing everything. Reward Doctors and Dentists that eliminate multiple visits. Reward those that actually cure or treat ethically. Also, cover Holistic Medicine and Medical treatments. Make ALL Pharmaceuticals and Hospitals Non-profit with no advertising budgets. Cap ALL executive compensation packages in the entire Medical Industries to an ethical value.

I don't have much of an opinion on this one either way, except to say that the American "healthcare" system is fundamentally flawed and exclusionary. We need comprehensive, single-payer reform, like every other industrialized nation.

Yes. Because health insurance is un-ethical. Outlaw health insurance. John Katko voted to repeal the tax on his Cadillac health insurance plan that we pay for with our income taxes. Let him pay for his own insurance.

We should have economically and we should also have relief from the president who doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. This moron is giving people killed he’s more worried about the fact that he’s not gonna get any subsidies for his trump properties that he is about our lives. Fuck this idiot, he has gotten people killed with his reckless language and miss information and constant lying. I don’t know any Republican in their right mind can justify backing this moron. I think it’s time to implement 25 for 45 and get this asshole our office.

Absolutely, verymary! May God smite them all for their smug denials and indifference to what is happening. How they can think they are immune is beyond me. Let them all die for their lies and willingness to let US die. I would spit on their graves, if I could... In the alternative, I would, at least, savor the moments...

Why shouldn't middle-class working people in unions have good, broad health insurances--WE ALL SHOULD HAVE THIS COVERAGE! WE CERTAINLY PAY ENOUGH TAXES FOR IT! WHY DON'T WE TAX THOSE GREAT PLANS THAT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS GET, INSTEAD?

The senate bill works it is a good give and take. The house should approve it so the president can sign it. Americans need the help along with small businesses and corporations. The small businesses help keep the economy going with the big corporations picking up the slack.

Working Americans WANT Medicare for All ALREADY! Abolish the predatory health insurance industry which sucks the life out off working Americans when they get sick or have an accident! Every other industrial nation has universal healthcare, their citizens don’t go bankrupt when they get cancer and their medical care is much better!
