house Bill H.R. 7

No Federal Funding for Abortion Services (With Exceptions)

Argument in favor

This bill would protect the innocent lives of unborn babies and the healthcare providers who do not wish to participate in abortions, while still allowing abortion under dire circumstances. Taxpayers shouldn't have to subsidize abortions.

This isn't about IF someone can or can't get an abortion...it's about if taxpayers pay for it or not. just pointing that out cuz it seems many think this is about making abortion illegal.

Healthcare decisions can still be between patient and doctor. But not on my dime. You have no natural right to force me, under threat of fine and imprisonment, to pay for any of your healthcare, let alone a procedure with which I fundamentally disagree. There is no magical "federal" money. The government has nothing that it does not first take from someone else. When you want the government to pay for it you are saying that all other citizens must be forced to pay for it. Now try to convince me why you have a right to force me to fund something I oppose. And keep in mind that truly good ideas don't require force at all.

I am 21 years old, a millennial, a college student, a strong Conservative, and a woman who is currently going through the miscarriage of her first child. I cannot fathom why abortion is so rampant in America, and why tax dollars are being used for a personal and (usually) avoidable procedure. I was overjoyed when I found out I was pregnant. Yes it would have been hard with me and my husband in college, but we knew we were responsible for the life that we had brought into the world. I do not believe that federal tax dollars should be used for abortions for any reason. However, I can deal with it being used for the extreme circumstances -- rape, incest, danger to the mother -- that are outlined in the bill. The government should not use MY tax dollars to fund something that I am against. If a woman can have intercourse, she can raise a child, put it up for adoption, or pay for her own abortion if she sees fit; the child did not ask to be conceived, and we shouldn't punish it because its mother is selfish. This is a bill that we need as women! We need to stand up for unborn children that have no voice. What have we become when we kill our own children as a nation?

Argument opposed

This would restrict women's reproductive freedom and access to healthcare while disproportionately hurting the poor and people of color. Besides, the ban on federal abortion funding is already in place and taxpayer dollars don't go to abortions.

Unless you have a vagina, you shouldn't be able to pass laws regarding them. There are millions of kids in the foster system who are neglected and taken in merely for the government checks. Without a WOMANS choice, we are causing more issue for tomorrow

This is the first step in attempting to defund Planned Parenthood which helps provide family planning and healthcare to many women, including low income. Healthcare decisions should be left between a doctor and patient!

This directly influences people of lower socio-economic classes, making it unnecessarily difficult to receive that which has been ruled a LEGAL procedure. If you are without insurance or under a plan that would not aid in funding the procedure, a child is eventually born which the parent (s) may not be able to care for properly without governmental assistance anyway.

This bill has nothing to do with Roe versus Wade!! It's not about making abortion illegal. It's about whether my and your tax dollars should fund the abortions. Is there no logic or reason? Majority of people using this app cannot even understand what the bill is. If you read the bill you would know this isn't about making an abortion illegal. You're blind ignorance and absolute unwillingness to even hear the words of the bill is astounding. Same people who believe sanctuary cities should be government funded for their illegal and unconstitutional activities. SMH

Defunding Planned Parenthood and organizations like it, would be a huge digression for women's rights and freedoms. Our bodies, our choice. Women have the right to choose and it should remain that way.

I'm voting YEA on this bill, because it's better than nothing and it will possibly save a lot of innocent lives. I understand that the bill isn't making abortion illegal, but I'm totally against my tax dollars being used to pay for the murder of unborn babies!! And I am APPALLED to see that so many of you act like an abortion is no big deal! You say MY BODY, MY RIGHT, MY CHOICE! How SELFISH you are! First of all, unborn children SHOULD have the same right to life that you enjoy! Secondly, what about that baby's father?! Why shouldn't HE have some say in the matter (except in cases of rape and incest)?! You women seem to be thinking only of yourselves! Women, it's NOT JUST YOUR BODY we're talking about here!! There's also the unborn child that so many of you think it's alright to kill. And why should that innocent baby be put to death because he/she was conceived through rape or incest, or because you forgot your birth control pill and didn't want to exercise a bit of SELF control?! ABORTION IS AN EXTREMELY SELFISH CHOICE, NOT TO MENTION A VERY BRUTAL, EVIL ACT OF MURDER! ONE OF THE BEST OPINIONS (religious arguments aside) I'VE SEEN ON WHY THE TAXPAYERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR WOMEN'S ABORTIONS! Countable member Donna said: "I have no problem with a woman's right to choose....Choose condoms, choose IUDs, choose birth control pills, choose diaphragms, choose Depo shots, and finally, choose to have responsible sex!! If these choices (almost all are free at your local health department that are taxpayer funded) aren't acceptable to you, then why does your abortion as a form of birth control deserve to be paid for by people that fundamentally don't support abortion? We have already provided you with many form of birth control that you CHOSE not to use." WELL SAID, DONNA!

Taking away federal funding won't stop abortions. It will only stop legal and safe abortions. Instead, taking away the funding will increase mortality rates and it's a ridiculous notion thought up by rich white men who have no right to tell women what we can and cannot do with our bodies. If you're going to try to force women to carry to term then the men responsible for impregnating these women should be forced to help financially and beyond.

What's on my mind? I'm still waiting for an explanation on how Abortion is healthcare when the patient dies. If abortion is 3% of PP budget, why don't they halt the service due to bad press?

I am a firm believer of the separation between church and state - a major tenant that this country was founded upon. There is no scientific evidence that abortion causes pain to a fetus. There is no scientific proof that life begins at conception. These are religious beliefs, and it is not my place, nor anyone else's place, to reinforce these beliefs on the population at large, who may very well have very different religious beliefs. Abortions will not cease to exist if federal funding is cut for safe abortions to be performed. History has taught us that restricting or withholding access to abortions will do nothing but cause unsafe abortions to occur, which will endanger the lives of many thousands of U.S. citizens. I ask you to consider these people, your constituents, and advocate on their behalf to ensure safe abortions.

This is disgusting, condescending legislation. Until men have reproductive burdens, they should not have the ability to condemn women who experience the unfortunate situations that lead to abortions. No one WANTS to have an abortion. Lets help women get more and better birth control and save out judgement for our elected representatives, not women in dire straights.

This has the potential to cause women to lose their lives. It is incredibly short-sighted and is based in religious beliefs that should not be forced on others.

Planned Parenthood v. Casey outlines the legitimate interest a woman has in terminating her pregnancy. That being said there is no reason tax dollars should be used in furnishing abortions for citizens. Should be a private choice between doctor and patient and a private cost to the patient.

Before you attack a sometimes life-saving procedure, attack the sources of unwanted pregnancies. A bill was recently passed which recalls international financial aid for women's reproductive care, leaving many women in distress and peril all around the world. Use that money to put further efforts into fighting Human Trafficking and Sex Slavery, Rape and Battery Prevention Programs, quality Sex Education, accessible and affordable birth control, Crisis Counseling, and free public Women's Self-Defense programs.

Stop trying to influence woman's rights with your bible. Woman's health is an important part of our collective freedom. If you are truly opposed to abortion fine - don't get one. If you are a male lawmaker shame on you for even thinking it's ok to chime in at all.

Can people please read more than just one word.. it does not say abortion will become illegal it says tax dollars won't pay for it. If people opposed to abortion aren't paying for it with their tax dollars they're probably more likely to let it be your business and not try to push more prolife laws. If you want an abortion pay for it yourself, if you don't have the money i imagine you will find it somewhere or you'll have to find money for doctors visits and a baby later on.
