house Bill H.R. 695

Funding the Gov't Until February 8th Plus $5 Billion for Border Security & $7 Billion for Disaster Relief

Argument in favor

Continuing resolutions that temporarily fund the government like this are far from ideal, but sometimes they’re necessary to ensure the federal government stays open for business. A partial government shutdown should be avoided at all costs.

“CONTINUING RESOLUTIONS ARE A MUST, TO KEEP OUR GOVERNMENT, FUNCTIONING” Continuing resolutions that temporarily fund the government like this are far from ideal, but sometimes they’re necessary to ensure the federal government stays open for business. A partial government shutdown should be avoided at all costs. As an American veteran, I strongly recommend passage of the appropriations bill which provides vital funding for our nation’s defense, ensuring that the military is ready to defend America, while taking care of the troops and their families by giving them a pay raise, and the equipment needed to perform their duties. This seems to create a centralized system for tracking criminal histories for individuals who require background checks due to working with vulnerable populations. This could be beneficial, in that it would reduce the burdens associated with repeatedly conducting background checks on individuals as they move through different positions. However, like the NICS system, it would need to have clearly defined processes and appeals systems. Okay Countable...my post below was not posted regarding the recent border funding, but was posted months ago in relation to funding our military! What gives? How did it get regurgitated under yesterday’s border funding legislation (which I’m for, BTW)? “Dec 2016 the news broke; the first time ever there were zero aircraft carriers patrolling anywhere in the world. If anyone thinks that made the world safer, they are morons. Under the Obama administration and sequester our military was decimated! Lack of parts and crucial training has led to an increase in loss of life and military hardware that we can’t afford to lose. Yes, Pentagon waste should always be under scrutiny, but give our war-fighters the tools and support they need to face growing threats from NOKO, China, and Iran, to name a few. I say double what they ask for, then we’ll all be a hell of a lot safer around the globe.”

Argument opposed

Funding the government for seven weeks, only to resume the same debate over border security funding that’s been playing out won’t resolve the issue. It’d be better to let the government partially shut down to force lawmakers to strike a longer-term deal.

Like this if you agree that you are sick and tired of seeing Congress claim they give a shi* about the deficit, yet they continually approve of these colossal defense-spending bills that cost more than $600 billion EACH nearly every few months! Please ask yourselves this: Why are we currently engaged in combat in 8 DIFFERENT POOR COUNTRIES that are clearly no immediate threat to us? Why are people complaining that we can not find a few billion dollars to fully fund CHIP for 10 years, but we can somehow find hundreds of billions of dollars for our already powerful military? What would you rather see your tax dollars being spent on: More weapons designed to murder people, or education funding to colleges to help lower tuition costs for yourselves and your children?

This is way too much on defense. We always complain like we shouldn’t be policing the entire world yet we insist on continuing to spend we are. How about putting this money towards healthcare for veterans or education for our kids?

Our bloated and mismanaged military budget doesn't need any more funding. Did you ever find all that missing Pentagon money that came to light right before 9/11? Clean your house and manage your money. I don't want any more tax dollars going the military industrial complex. If you want more money try raising corporate taxes and taxes on the wealthy to pay for it instead of lowering it.

Why don't we spend this money on healthcare, education, and resources instead?

This isn’t defense spending, it’s offense spending. We’re spending money putting troops and resources into countries that they shouldn’t be in and even with all this money being thrown at military, we haven’t made the world a safer place. This money is just being used to fund the military-industrial complex. Military spending needs to be slashed! Put it towards healthcare, education, and job training instead.

Cut and slash. Give us a defense, not an empire. Not our job to police the world. Back the budget down to only what it takes to defend American soil.

I don’t like government shutdowns, but I’ve had it with kicking the can down the road. Only a quarter of our government will be shuttered. I want the president to go for the whole $25 billion and do the wall all at once. Doing it piecemeal isn’t cost effective, but being a realist I know we won’t get all of it now. But I don’t want any compromise with the Democrats, no compromise with the nations security. The whole $5 billion now, get the wall built and done now. #MAGA #Build the damn wall!

Wow, that’s fucking shady. Of course we all want background checks for volunteers. But almost $7Billion for the murder machine? With my taxes not Morgan Stanley’s, or Apple, or GE. One item, one bill. Scumbags.

The military is bankrupting our country! There is no reason to increase the military budget every year. Maybe it’s time to focus less on killing Arabs and more on fixing issues for our people

Yes. Our military must be fully equipped, trained and combat ready at all times 24-7, 365 days a year. Fund them now. Cut all spending for illegal aliens. Use the money to take care of our military and veterans.

Seems like a lot of money. Maybe if we'd stop getting in wars that we have no business being in and then cont'ing our involvement for years and years we wouldn't need to spend so much money. How about spending some of this money on our domestic issues?
