Should Options for Reducing the U.S. Military Presence on the Korean Peninsula Be Considered?

Argument in favor

America’s presence in the North Korean peninsula an expensive relic of a time when South Korea was too weak to defend itself against North Korean aggression. Times have changed, and it’s sensible to evaluate whether the U.S. should reduce or even eliminate its presence on the Korean Peninsula.

Get our troops the hell out of foreign countries. We have no business there. America’s presence in the North Korean peninsula an expensive relic of a time when South Korea was too weak to defend itself against North Korean aggression. Times have changed, and it’s sensible to evaluate whether the U.S. should reduce or even eliminate its presence on the Korean Peninsula.

“Too soon”? US troops have been in SK for more than 60 years and it’s “too soon” to even LOOK AT OPTIONS??? Don’t be stupid. We can investigate the options. That all this is asking. To look at the options.

I will almost always support a reduction in our presence around the world in an effort to promote peace.

Argument opposed

Given the North Korean regime’s instability, as well as China’s efforts to increase its influence in Asia, now isn’t the time to consider withdrawing U.S. troops from the Korean Peninsula. The U.S. needs to stay present in Asia to stabilize the region and ensure that China’s neighbors remain free and thriving.

Not while China is building mini bases on islands they created in the South China Sea. When it comes to assessing the need, I think I’ll go with that of SOD Mattis. Defense is NOT an area where we need to cut spending. We must maintain our global presence. It is the ONLY thing that has kept the balance of power against evil regimes.

The United States Military is all that stands in the way of totalitarian communist nations like China from bullying our smaller less powerful allies.

I don’t believe it would be good for their economy or ours.

Being them home. We have bigger problems in our own backyard to deal with. We shouldn't be the world's police.

We need to stay strong with Kim Jong Un especially after the endless provocation. We should not back down until we get legitimate UN Nuclear inspectors on site verifying what they agree to.

I think that we have better places for our military to be. We need to examine where the U.S. military presence can actually make a difference, say in our own country. Puerto Rico sure could use some help with rebuilding & id rather see them there.

We’d be letting South Korea down, plus all our allies around them.😁

Our military presence is South Korea is completely unnecessary. We’re just over-extending ourselves and spending money that we don’t need to be spending. Let’s fix the problems here at home!

Jumping the gun, are we? It's good to feel optomistic, but please allow the facts to play out on North Korea. Positive feelings should not be overstated but balanced with caution and force.

Japan and South Korea still need our help and protection. I am tired of our so-called-president kowtowing to fascist leaders. He needs to grow a spine, a long with Congress, and put these people in their place, not stand beside them and give them the same world status as the POTUS.

We need to stop policing the world and focus on healing our very divided country. A total reduction of our world military presence would promote peace as well as free up money in our budget to reduce our deficit.

The time for having our nose in everyone’s business is over. It is long past time to end the Korean War. We need to start asking the countries involved whether and to what extent they want us involved in their business in a military force and let their opinions guide our reductions in manpower. Should they wish to extend our stay fine but it should be their choice not ours. Our economy should never be build upon our unwanted presence in another country.

We need to reduce our troops in all foreign countries. It is not our role to play guardian and it only really serves to create more turmoil.

It is time to get our troops out of foreign countries. Why are we still over there in the first place? We are on better terms with North Korea now and even if they attacked the South we could easily take the North out.

Why? After 60 years, why should this be considered now that we have the North at the table? Seems very counterproductive.

Most countries benefit from our military presence alone. Destructors know the US armed forces well enough to avoid stirring up trouble, which may not ensure peace but certainly keep the demons at bay so to speak.

I’m all for deterring potential threats, especially North Korea, but given the current political climate we need to focus more on securing our own borders before we worry about another country’s conflict.
