Does a Pentagon Report to Save $125 Billion on Defense Need to be Released So Congress Can Cut Spending?

Argument in favor

The U.S. has the world’s most powerful military by far, and saving $125 billion over five year is a small portion of total defense spending. Congress should ensure that report is released and quickly consider legislation implementing its recommendations to save money.

Given that Republicans are constantly telling us that old people are bankrupting America, you would think that they might think $125 billion would be worth saving. The truth appears in the con argument, if money can be saved by cutting benefits to ordinary citizens then Republicans cannot wait to throw them to the wolves. If money can be saved by allowing the DOD to choose to save money then NO EMERGENCY! Can someone give the elected idiots a reality check? Citizens who pay into Social Security are NOT the problem. An out of control defense budget is--especially when the pockets of Members are being filled by lobbyists for the defense industry.

We constantly cut money from the military families and not from the contracts we spend billions over budget on. If something is a failed project (Zumwalt) we don't need to spend 6 billion over budget for it. If we need a bucket, we shouldn't buy from a contractor for $150 what we could buy at Home Depot for $15. Pockets are being lined somewhere and everyone has the right to know.

I work for the military and we waste a huge amount of money every year. We MUST be accountable for every dollar spent. This is taxpayer money and we should be better stewards of it.

Argument opposed

There is waste and excessive spending that could be found in every federal agency, the Dept. of Defense is not unique in that regard. Publicizing the report is great, but any bill that comes of it should be considered in the normal manner rather than being expedited.

Take the report under advisement and put it in the process of passing a frigging balanced budget for the year!!

Just reading the question smelled of Democrat. Further reading…something's just doesn't seem right. I would rather wait until the Trump administration has full charge. This proposed bill may be the wolf Obama reaching forward into Trumps future to further degrade our military. And I am also very sure the DoD has massive waste hidden in it's budget for special black projects. Maybe right or maybe wrong, but General Mattis knows his way around a budget. Overview- our military needs a larger budget to rebuild.

The GOP loves to talk about how the .09% of people on food stamps is "wasteful" to the country, maybe they would like to cut down on our largely private military.

Republicans are quick to decry spending on social programs, but here's a report on DOD waste that's getting buried? The motion is just for it to be released and evaluated. The answer is obvious.

It has been known for a long time that there is incredible waste in the defense budget. This money could be used elsewhere especially on infrastructure!!!

They should make a bill that encompasses all departments, but at the moment any money not wasted is good. There is no harm in being more efficient. Our military is strong, will continue to be strong, and can only benefit from the cutting of unnecessary expenses.

The military is the single largest expense in the budget. Reducing waste in it would have a proportionally large impact in reducing the deficit. That alone is worth a bit of expediting.

we need to use more common sense. We bash North Korea for being paranoid when we are the ones who are obsessed with transferring wealth to these private defense contractors. Just a little common sense for you, we spend millions on the TSA, Homeland Defense, just to stay on the defensive. While terrorist are much more pragmatic, they have millions, (perhaps billions) yet they use pennies on the dollar to terrorize us. Who is playing this smarter? We need to wise up and understand that the only way we can win and protect this countries' interest is by not playing the game. Worry about HOME. We do not make America Great by being hoodwinked by a false prophet.

Of course it does! There are too many 'pet projects' that congress keeps alive for their districts that are just boondoggles & the DOD doesn't want. There is plenty of room for cutbacks, but no doubt the GOP-led congress will vote to continue these wastes of taxpayer money.

We spend way too much on defense. Considerable savings can be realized without any compromise of our security and our ability to protect our allies. This bill should be passed.

I hope that Congress will make informed decisions, I certainly trust my senators to do so. As the DOD is a large portion of non entitlement spending, I think it is a good target if one is hoping to cut spending.

We spend more on defense than all other countries. If we can eliminate the surplus and pour it back into meaningful projects or social services then we must do so. That seems like the most logically plan of action.
