Should People be Automatically Registered to Vote at the DMV?

Argument in favor

Automatically registering eligible voters when they visit a DMV makes the registration process effortless for voters, which in turn will increase turnout.

Of course they should. It’s a legal right to be able to vote and it should be automatic. Simple!

I love AVR. I think it is a great way for the State to make it easier to vote and represent the people. The bill has a provision for checking citizenship built in. I think automatic registration at 18 can be linked by SSN and be even easier.

Argument opposed

Americans who want to vote are perfectly capable of registering to vote on their own. States don't need to do it for them whenever they go to the DMV.

Registering to vote is a responsibility and you should be responsible enough and mature enough to do so. It is also a possible precursor to slide in voting at 16 and/or noncitizens. Have the registration cards available, but it should be a separate process.

Any state that gives licenses or I’d s to illegals should not be allowed to participate in any federal election— I have no problem with all Americans being able to vote —- but citizenship and a fingerprint of each person should be required to be verified.. No incarcerated person should be able to vote until thay have been released from probation and all fines payed

There are legal residents who can’t and shouldn’t vote, who have drivers licenses or cars

It blows my mind that automatically registering to vote at the DMV could be a divisive and partisan issue. The more people that register, the more people will vote and our country will be one of true representation. The absolute least intelligent opinion opposing? ”No, the Democrats just want the vote and soon babies will be registered at birth with proxy votes.” Ridiculous. I’m sure Democrats want the vote as much as Republicans. And every person registered won’t be of one party or the other. I suspect the vast majority will be independents. But if your Party is not strong enough to represent the people without suppressing the vote, then they don’t deserve to exist! Strengthen your party. Don’t suppress the Vote!

Yes why shouldn’t they? We should make it as easy as possible for every citizen of this country to vote. That is unless you’re afraid of every possible citizen in this country voting. If you have that fear I would suggest to you that you’re in the wrong country. Perhaps you alone in a one party country like Russia, Iran North Korea Etc.

The more voters there are the stronger our democracy. Which is why every stinking lousy traitorous Republican will vote against this

Agree with this, but how does it effect those that don’t drive, or use DMV? Easiest thing is automatic voter registration at age 18. Perhaps coordinated with SS administration?

The only reason this hasn’t happened already, has to do with the GOP not wanting everyone to vote. Why do you think they gerrymander, redistrict, support voter suppression and voter intimidation tactics? If they control who votes, they keep control.

It’s amazing that something as fundamental to our democracy as registering to vote is becoming a contentious issue. We need to be making it easier to vote, not harder! Automatic voter registration is an excellent way to get as many people to participate in our democratic process as possible.

If a person has all the identifications needed to get a Driver’s license, registering to vote also would only make complete sense.

The democrats can’t win over intelligent people with their policies. Instead they are doing everything they can to recruit the irresponsible, the ignorant, the incarcerated, and the illegal.

The idea that this is detrimental for your party means your party is irrelevant to the concept of democracy.
