house Bill H.R. 626

Should Members of Congress Be Banned from Buying First Class Flights?

Argument in favor

Spending taxpayer money on first class flight tickets is a waste of money. Members of Congress shouldn’t be allowed to use taxpayer money on these indulgences when Congressional approval is low and the national debt is over $22 trillion.

If taxpayers are paying for it yes. If they are personally paying for it no. If a lobbyist is paying for it, they should be walking.

Unless they pay for it themselves, fly like the rest of us. I could see business class. First class no!

Argument opposed

Members of Congress — many of whom are elderly — often have to travel long distances to hard-to-reach locations on official business. Putting them in coach for long-haul trips will make it more difficult for them to meet their official obligations as public servants.

I don't think the taxpayer should pay for first class flights for Congress or for cabinet members. However, if they're independently wealthy and want to pay with their own money, I don't care. We'd need strong audits and ethical investigations for that, probably, but I could work with it. But you can pay taxpayer funding.

It’s inappropriate for tax dollars to pay for first class. If representatives, who fly frequently, want to upgrade their seat with their own money or air miles I see no issue with that.

I don't think taxpayers should foot the bill for first-class flights for our representatives, but I do think they should be allowed to fly first-class if they pay the difference out of their own funds. In the grand scheme of things, this bill seems fairly useless. Forcing reps to fly coach won't save us all that much money. What we need to control the deficit are higher taxes on the ultra-rich and for corporations like Amazon to pay their fair share.

Only coach class tickets should be paid for using taxpayer money. Why would a public servant not want to remain in touch with the lifestyle of the people they represent.

If they pay out of pocket and no reimbursement from the government go ahead fly first class. If my tax dollars are funding it that’s a hell no! I can’t afford first class.

I think it would be an exceptionally good idea to force all elected officials to fly coach and get to know the American people. Honestly, they should pay for their travel just like anyone else... I really like Richard’s idea, caping their pay and benefits at an O-6.

They can pay the difference out of their own pockets. We do not need to create a special class. Besides, Congressmen and women should always seek to put themselves close to the people. After all, at some point they really are representing US all.

No Members of Congress should not be banned from flying first class. Not only that we should probably support that as the only way they can travel. Come on people these are our representatives let’s treat them well and pay them well. When they don’t do their jobs lets vote them out. All these suggestions of draconian, vindictive mistreatment and disrespect generally sound like something Trump would do. No wonder we have such a wacko as President — we are ourselves advocating quick stupid solutions that are penny wise and pound foolish.

Our Elected Public Servants FEEL ENTITLED. THEY GET THE THIRD WEEK OF EVERY MONTH OFF WORK! YET WANT TO STRIP "WE THE PEOPLE" OF OUR SOCIAL SAFETY NET. WE CAN'T AFFORD TO LIVE ON MINIMUM WAGE! YET THE ENTITLED ASSES EVEN WANT TO STRIP "WE THE PEOPLE" OF SOMETHING THAT CAN'T SUSTAIN US! CONGRESS NEEDS TO HAVE A HUGE PAY CUT SO THEY CAN FEEL OUR PAIN. YOU CAN'T REPRESENT WHAT YOU HAVEN'T LIVED. WALK MILES IN OUR SHOES AND CUT THE ENTITLED CRAP!

Taxpayer money should go for coach...the representative would have the option to upgrade from their own pocket.

Our representatives are the voices of the people that put them there. The majority of the people I know don’t fly first class. They need to stop the useless spending and pass a budget!

The only time members of Congress should be flying first class is if they’re paying the difference themselves. Ideally, only those members serving Alaska and Hawaii should be flying. All others should be traveling by rail, car, or bus. Doing so presents another opportunity to connect with voters.

We all know our legislators are paid a salary which IN NO WAY explains the vast amounts of wealth they accumulate once in office. GET MONEY OUT OF AMERICAN POLITICS. Then we can discuss whether these traitors to our nation get refunded for posh plane tickets.

Of course! As I have stated many times already through this APP, the more you, OUR representatives, can live like your constituents, the more you should be able to identify with our problems/issues. You cannot necessarily walk in our shoes if you don’t even shop in the same malls/stores. And you may often become inspired when you truly have our same problems/issues; such as: healthcare & benefits, transportation, retirement, law enforcement, education, and many others. It’s either that or take the bus & really rub elbows with us regular folk.

If they want first class they have to spend their own money. There are more millionaires in Congress percentage wise than the general public so they can afford it

Every federal employee traveling on government business has per diem rates they are paid. If they travel first class, they are responsible for any amount over the per diem travel rate. Congress should also follow these regulations or personally pay the difference if they wish to upgrade.
