Should the FDA Have More Power to Seize Imports of Controlled Substances?

Argument in favor

This commonsense bill would make it easier for the FDA to seize illegal shipments of drugs that aren’t yet approved for medical use and punish those who skirt the law.

Don’t they already? Whose job is it to control controlled substances?

Put a 100% tariff on the pills. That would limit the problem.

Argument opposed

The FDA shouldn’t have the power to seize or destroy imported drugs that it hasn’t approved for medical use or to debar individuals and companies who break the law.

Big pharma has too much of a stranglehold on every facet of our government already. I’m hesitant to give them even more power with a bill like this.

This is not their job to control things just how they see fit. The people need more of a say in things because pharma, tobacco, and alcohol controls most of our governments actions!

What is House Bill H.R. 5752?

This bill would strengthen the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authority to seize, detain, refuse, or destroy imports of drugs that are under development and considered controlled substances. Individuals or companies found to have violated this bill’s provisions would face fines and debarment by the FDA — meaning they’d be prohibited from providing services to a person or entity that has an approved or pending drug application.

Impact

Individuals and companies importing drugs in violation of this bill; and the FDA.

Cost of House Bill H.R. 5752

The CBO estimates that enacting this bill would generate an insignificant increase in revenue.

More Information

In-DepthIntroduced by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), this bill passed the House Energy & Commerce Committee on a voice vote. It has the support of two Republican cosponsors.

Vote no on this bill. The FDA should not Be able to seize these drugs. Sometimes These drugs can save lives. Plus they are cheaper. Our GOV. isn't doing anything to get drug prices down, so we should be able to get them from other countries.

When imported medicine is 1/20th the price, what did you think would happen? Our incomes are worth less every year but healthcare costs are astronomical and still rising. Maybe you should work on lowering drug prices. UNIVERSAL SINGLE PAYER HEALTHCARE.

Big pharmaceutical companies are probably the initiators of this bill. Their lobbyists are in this one. No I think this should not pass but it is a Republican Congress so it will pass.

First, this isn't the FDA's issue to control. I can't help but agree with several other comments I've seen that this comes from significant lobbying from the pharmaceutical industry. We need to be focusing on getting all citizens health care instead of continuing to pander to the pharmaceutical industry.

This bill is too vague. It might worsen a problem we hope to solve because it is nonspecific. Vote no.
