"Animal Trophies" From Threatened Species: Should They be Illegal?

Argument in favor

Allowing animal trophies from endangered or threatened species to be imported into the U.S. legally creates demand for the senseless killing of such animals so they should be banned.

Illegal? Undoubtedly! This should be bipartisan with an unanimous ‘Yay’ to pass this bill. . To quote Mahatma Gandhi, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Argument opposed

Regulated hunting of endangered or threatened animals should be part of a scientific wildlife management program can help ensure the long-term survival of those species.

This does not appear to cover lawfully taken game. I’m ok with considering conservation initiatives, but not with criminalizing something that was legal when it was hunted. Endangered and threatened are NOT being used scientifically, often it only takes a small geographic area and makes a decision vs the whole population. And we all know the government and science don’t mix, just like politics and common sense/

If the animal is taken legally then I don’t see what the problem is. If the animal is poached, then I think the person has bigger problems than trying to bring in a trophy.

Hunting is the major/ only source of money for conservation in America and many places in Africa. If an animal is legally taken, the trophy should be allowed to come back. Legal hunting of big game in africa is very expensive, and supports local economies. Hunters will not shell out the cash if they cant bring the trophy home. When these animals are killed, the locals get the meat and the hunter gets the trophy. Without legal hunting, poachers will have run of the land. Poachers out kill legal hunters 100 to 1. Legal hunting regulates how many animals can be taken, and will ensure that it is a sustainable amount. “Sport” hunting where one kills an animal just for a trophy, letting everything else go to waste is a myth. Grow up, do research, and realize these issues are more nuanced then they appear to be.

All animal trophies should be illegal. Hunting for sport is wrong and should be banned.

Animal trophies are reprehensible especially for species that are endangered.

Yes, Yes, Yes! We need to protect endangered and protected species so that we stop causing the extinction of species.

There is no dignity or honor in trophy hunting. It isn’t to feed a family or a rite of passage, it is what wealthy monsters do.

These animals are either endangered or threatened, we should be working together globally to help these animals thrive, live, and increase in population. Their numbers are down, and "Animal Trophies" are not needed to bring our economy up. There are better ways, more humane ways, better moral ways, to increase our economy right here in the United States. We can raise our economy without destroying the wildlife of another country.

Absolutely! Frankly, trophy hunting is disgusting regardless. It’s killing for pleasure. I’m a hunter/fisher and I was taught not to kill if I wasn’t going to eat it or take more than I need. There are plenty of prey animals without killing protected species, for food or for “fun”.

I am not against hunting, I eat meat, that would be rather hypocritical. But trophy hunting—all trophy hunting IMO—is a different matter. It only serves man’s vanity and, especially in the case of endangered species, should not be allowed.

YES, YES, YES. Trophy hunting leads to demand. It does NOT help preserve a species. Only weak insecure people (like Don Jr) need to bolster their masculinity by killing animals. Hunts on game farms/reserves where the animals cannot escape is nothing more than shooting animals in a cage. Why don’t we arm the animals as well and make it an even match?? In Africa the guides do practically everything for these “hunters” including sometimes having to kill the poor creature because the “hunter” is incapable. Trophy hunters are pathetic and sad.

I can’t understand any other reason to kill for sport than as an ego bolster. Saving our planet’s fragile ecosystem and the animals in it is more important than saving a coward’s fragile ego.
