house Bill H.R. 550

Should the Use of Force Against Iran Be Blocked & the Iraq War Authorization Be Repealed?

Argument in favor

President Donald Trump risked a dangerous escalation of tensions with Iran by authorizing a drone strike against Iranian General Qassem Soleimani while he was coordinating with Iran-backed Shia militias in Iraq. This bill would prohibit further escalations by requiring the administration to get approval from Congress before it uses military force against Iran. It is long past time for Congress to reclaim its constitutional war powers by repealing the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq. Allowing the AUMF to remain in effect would be dangerous and irresponsible, as it allows U.S. military operations in the Middle East to continue indefinitely.

Yes. The USA should leave Syria, Iraq & Iran asap. This will leave a vacuum in that region but that region will be fighting today, tomorrow and 20 years from tomorrow. We are currently waiting for permission from Iraq to place a Patriot Missle Defenses there. The day another nation tells the USA military what they can or cannot do to protect themselves is the day it’s time to go. I’m certain that a national referendum vote on leaving that region immediately would have a positive result.

Argument opposed

This legislation would hinder the executive branch’s ability to deter aggression by Iran and protect American citizens and military personnel in the region, in addition to U.S. allies and partners. Given that the Trump administration is already on record with a veto threat, it would be a waste of scarce legislative time to consider this bill. Repealing the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq without a replacement would be a grave mistake. Prohibiting the use of American military force in Iraq would give free rein to ISIS and Iran-backed proxies and create a vacuum that could destabilize Iraq & the broader Middle East.

This is a partisan attempt to limit President Trump from carrying out the duties of his job. Barack Obama launched 500+ drone strikes during his presidency, and he faced very little Democratic oversight - and the GOP didn’t do much to hinder him, either. This will come back to bite Democrats in the ass, whenever the next one takes the White House. They’ll whine when the GOP acts to severely restrict that next Dem President’s ability to use force to protect our interests, and Democrats will have only themselves to blame.

The sitting President of the United States must retain the power to send troops or munitions in an urgent situation, unhampered by Congress. If later it is determined that the President handled the situation incorrectly, then he/she should be called on the carpet for it.

The Congress needs to take back the war powers it conceded to the president since now we have a reckless irresponsible self centered president in the office who Never sees beyond the action or has a plan once he gets engaged in something. Congress take back your legislative powers.

The world will no longer allow the wholesale carnage and terror that we perpetrate against other nations-as a means of stealing their wealth and natural resources!! We must reign in our losses in our own treasure and blood for the sake of protecting the ill gotten gains that only benefit billionaires!! We must create an America for all Americans not just the 1%!! Let’s support Bernie Sanders for president!!

Absolutely take away and formalize this crazy unlimited power to wage war. This current President, Trump is completely incompetent and radically irrational and completely unable to make an informed decision. He is a pathological liar and the only right he deserves, is to empty his bowls when triggered.

Stop all the unnecessary wars in the Middle East. This is a never ending cycle of constant wars, over and over. Congress as a whole ought to start checking the executive branch to bring back our troops.

No more eternal warfare! The decline of this region is a consequence of our abysmal foreign policy, so it is our duty and obligation to help support and repair this region. But military might does not need to be that support, or at least not the current amount. The people of Iraq don’t want to feel subjugated by us, and the people of Iran don’t want the constant fear of being subjugated. Support the troops by opposing needless war! Support the troops by bringing them home!

Shut your mouths, use the brains you are supposed to have and support the President in what he deems the correct way to handle an enemy that has hated this country for most of my almost 60 years of life. If I can see it, you, who are supposed to have the Safety and Security of our country foremost in your minds and hearts, should see it as well.

The President is not going to sign this Bill so it isn't worth the paper it is written on. Democrats are still upset they lost the election so they are now trying to weaken the President's capabilities. I just don't think if a Democrat was in the White House that the Republicans would stoop this low to weaken the office of the Commander and Chief. Just like impeachment, the Democratic faction of the country will lose here again.

Its long overdue that we leave the middle east, we have accomplished nothing and it has cost the taxpayers billions of dollars and 2000 american lives. We had no legal right to invade Iraq and no right to enter amy new middle eastern country. Lets get out of this mess with as little cost to lives and money, we cannot afford any more foreign wars or police actions. We do not owe the world our protection from their own problems. Let them settle their own internal problems, we are only making more radical muslims to spread the caliphate.

Our presence and more importantly our rapid retrieval would eliminate 30 years of US war efforts including the injuries and deaths that we’ve endured. I don’t believe we should stay indefinitely, but we should maintain a presence... be it manned, unmanned or within striking distance.

Repeal it! As a mom who has a son in the Navy, I ask that we refrain from fighting unnecessary wars, end the wars that we should have never gotten into in the first place (i.e., Afghanistan) and bring our sons and daughters back home.

This is a lot different than when the constitution was written when war was announced against a country and it was country fighting country. Now you have terrorists hiding within several countries that can not or will not control the threat. Taking out terrorists that pose a threat to America is not a war and shouldn't be treated as one.
