house Bill H.R. 550

Should the Use of Force Against Iran Be Blocked & the Iraq War Authorization Be Repealed?

Argument in favor

President Donald Trump risked a dangerous escalation of tensions with Iran by authorizing a drone strike against Iranian General Qassem Soleimani while he was coordinating with Iran-backed Shia militias in Iraq. This bill would prohibit further escalations by requiring the administration to get approval from Congress before it uses military force against Iran. It is long past time for Congress to reclaim its constitutional war powers by repealing the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq. Allowing the AUMF to remain in effect would be dangerous and irresponsible, as it allows U.S. military operations in the Middle East to continue indefinitely.

Yes. The USA should leave Syria, Iraq & Iran asap. This will leave a vacuum in that region but that region will be fighting today, tomorrow and 20 years from tomorrow. We are currently waiting for permission from Iraq to place a Patriot Missle Defenses there. The day another nation tells the USA military what they can or cannot do to protect themselves is the day it’s time to go. I’m certain that a national referendum vote on leaving that region immediately would have a positive result.

Argument opposed

This legislation would hinder the executive branch’s ability to deter aggression by Iran and protect American citizens and military personnel in the region, in addition to U.S. allies and partners. Given that the Trump administration is already on record with a veto threat, it would be a waste of scarce legislative time to consider this bill. Repealing the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq without a replacement would be a grave mistake. Prohibiting the use of American military force in Iraq would give free rein to ISIS and Iran-backed proxies and create a vacuum that could destabilize Iraq & the broader Middle East.

This is a partisan attempt to limit President Trump from carrying out the duties of his job. Barack Obama launched 500+ drone strikes during his presidency, and he faced very little Democratic oversight - and the GOP didn’t do much to hinder him, either. This will come back to bite Democrats in the ass, whenever the next one takes the White House. They’ll whine when the GOP acts to severely restrict that next Dem President’s ability to use force to protect our interests, and Democrats will have only themselves to blame.

The sitting President of the United States must retain the power to send troops or munitions in an urgent situation, unhampered by Congress. If later it is determined that the President handled the situation incorrectly, then he/she should be called on the carpet for it.

Facts seem to be lacking among the Trumpublicans especially in the Senate. It’s amazing how usually sensible people go all haywire when a Mob Boss fading game show host tells them a pack of lies and they won’t even try to find out the truth. How can the Trumpublicans have a problem with the FACTS of this case when The Prosecution did an excellent job of laying out the case against Trump, so those of you who paid attention bear with me. Some Missing Facts: when Obama authorized the drone strikes we were at war in Iraq. Most importantly he didn’t MURDER AN OFFICIAL OF ANOTHER COUNTRY THAT HE HAD PUSHED TOO FAR & IN A SITUATION WHERE THEY WERE BETWEEN A ROCK & A HARD PLACE. That brought the missile strike which killed 176 people and saved Trump’s butt. Our troops got traumatic brain injuries and an American base was destroyed. All because Trump’s leadership skills are MISSING. Presidents Bush and Obama could have killed Solemani but neither took the opportunity because they realized it would put US in a possible war situation. Trump has mishandled so many circumstances incorrectly, BUT he has never faced consequences of those choices. This should be the time BUT the Trumpublicans are spineless cowards who will not stand up for the constitution. Trump shredded the Nuclear deal with Iran that Obama put in place which started the entire Iran business because he is jealous of Obama. Trump threw our alliance with the Kurds because Putin told him to. He put us & them in a more difficult position by enabling Turkey to raid us because we were in a weaker position. The people on here who are writing about The House Impeachment being a coup have no knowledge of the Constitution or any other governmental law which is needed to have an intelligent opinion nor do they desire to gain any knowledge they just repeat talking points fed to them by Fox News, etc. which peddles Putin Hackers talking points. Not a one of the Trumpublicans have a clue what critical thinking is.
