house Bill H.R. 5293

The Pentagon’s $575 Billion Spending Package for FY2017

Argument in favor

The U.S. military needs to be as strong as it has ever been to stand against Chinese and Russian aggression while also combating ISIS and other threats. This bill provides those vital resources.

I had to read the opposing argument twice. Our national defense is the first priority of the Federal Govt! Read the Constitution!!!! I often wonder how some people manage to even dress themselves in the mornings. There are no words for the level of frustration I feel. We CANNOT AFFORD NOT TO HAVE THE MOST POWERFUL MILITARY IN THE WORLD!

Saying there is "undoubtedly wasteful spending somewhere in this bill" is so generic and non-specific it could literally be applied to any bill. We won't have a nation with as much freedom as we have now if we don't protect it.

Because of the weakness of this present Administration, our enemies have increased in number and in power. And as for our allies, they are struggling with their own problems brought about by globalist policies and Islamic supremacists. The world in general is becoming more and more dangerous every day! As Countable member SherryTX pointed out, we cannot afford to NOT have the strongest military in the world! You have crafty, power-hungry Vladimir Putin in Russia; and there's that lunatic in North Korea, Kim Jong-un; and don't forget the "dragon" that resides in China, Xi Jinping. And the whole Middle East and much of Africa and Asia are infected with the "cancer" that is Islamic supremacy! Just take a look at this infographic: https://planetrulers.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/current-world-dictators-2016.jpg What it boils down to is this: There's an awful lot of evil in the world, and too many "actors" on the world stage have nuclear capability, as well as other WMDs. And since bullies only respect power and strength, the USA had better have both! Of course, it would also help A LOT if we had a real statesman in the Oval Office like Reagan! And don't forget what he said: "We are never defeated, unless we give up on God."

Argument opposed

There is undoubtedly wasteful spending included somewhere in this bill, and the U.S. can’t afford to have by far the most powerful military in the world when there’s so many other priorities that need funding.

I'm all for a well funded military and I understand that some spending has to remain classified for security purposes BUT everyone needs to learn how to make a fiscally responsible budget and I don't think the Pentagon understands how to do so.

It's just plain wasteful. Military contractors have sucked at the teat of taxpayers way too long. I know first hand how wasteful this spending is as I have worked for a company who built their LCS Navy fleet. Waste everywhere.

Our nation is addicted to war, stemming from the militarization of our industries during WWII. Enough is enough. Let's invest in education, social programs, and infrastructure to make the foundation of our nation strong again. Military spending has spiraled out of control unnecessarily.

$575 billion to promote war and contribute to worldwide unrest? If we should be leading the world in anything, it should be in education and healthcare and diversity, not in the size of a military force that is already bloated.

Why is there 700M in assets still in Afghanistan with no one to operate them...only Isis to eventually take them over...like the empty powerplants out there.

Let's do this! Yes, PORK, PORK and PORK. ISIS is spreading into the continental US, China telling US Navy to stand down in the South and East China Sea, Kim is launching rockets towards US mainland and Russia stirring up Syria. We can either stand up or rollover. Even our own POTUS imports criminals from Mexico or ISIS immigrants seeking room and board. We need a new president smart enough to recognize that Freedom comes at a cost and planing begins with the Commander-in-Chief. Sissies like Obama or Hillary need not apply.

Why do we need a military budget that's bigger than the next ten countries combined? True fiscal conservatives understand that the size of government must be cut across the board. Our government is full of waste and fraud, and the military is no exception.

The US already spends $610 billion on its military already, which is 34% of the world's total spending on military. We already have arguably the most powerful military in the world. Not only should there be more focus on creating a sensible and balanced budget, there are domestic issues which deserve a spot in the budget.

We do not need themanyh modernization and developmental programs, which will morph into ONE TRILLION DOLLARS over the years ahead and provide NOTHING to help fight today's asymetrical warfare. Stop the military/industgrial complex self-enrichment programs now!

I see too many people spouting about how programs like the F-35 and others should be cut cause we don't need them. I just want to say unless you can predict the future just pay attention to things that you know, because you obviously don't know defense. With other countries like China which is developing its advanced stealth fighter "2017" and Russia developing jets like the PAK FA and both these countries wanting to challenge America influence in geo political areas around the globe. America needs to keep preparing to defend against other countries advances in technology. Once they have a superior Armed forces and better prepared military you will be obeying there politburo or even see foreign troops on your streets. Defense is not an area to cut corners and go with the cheapest bidders. I would however be all for better accounting from the Pentagon on where this money goes.

It is ridiculous to spend even more money on wars that we don't need to be in. I agree we need funds to defend ourselves but there has to be some point where we see such a huge sum of money being wasted on people giving up their lives for causes that don't advance the US at all. We need to invest these funds in our people. Send them to college, make them see how they can impact our everyday life. I oppose any increase of revenue to war and wish it would be severely decreased

Our military budget is already 10 times larger than the next 10 countries combined. We don't need that kind of monetary surplus to assert military superiority. It's important to focus on aid and I think the budget should be bolstered instead of military strength.

We already spend an absurd amount on defense. Far too many other areas are suffering to justify this.

If we are ever want to have an effective combination of free market ideas and effective public services we need to significantly reduce military spending. If we don't we will eventually have to raise taxes, which will most likely have some negative effect. I can only see positive benefits from reducing our military presence in the world
