house Bill H.R. 502

Should the Feds Investigate the Use of Cryptocurrencies in Sex & Drug Trafficking?

Argument in favor

Sex and drug trafficking are serious crimes and it makes sense for the federal government to investigate whether cryptocurrencies are being used to facilitate them.

This bill would direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to report on the use of virtual currencies and online marketplaces in sex and drug trafficking. It all about following the money, no matter what form it is, including kick backs!

Anything and everything related to human trafficking should be up for investigation. Why is this even a question?!

I’m in full support of and recommend passage of this bill as written. Prostitution and sex trafficking is the oldest profession. Protecting those who are vulnerable is always right and those who can’t defend themselves no matter their age or social standing. #MAGA #BuildTheWall

Argument opposed

Cryptocurrencies aren’t the main medium of exchange for sex and drug trafficking, cash is. This report could serve as a pretext for excessive regulation of cryptocurrencies.

If you don’t tackle the environment right now, and exclusively, everything else will be pointless.

I would be in full support of this if it weren’t for the anti-sex worker undertones. Human trafficking and sex slavery is a big issue but this just feels like a slippery slope.

I do not think we understand the function of cryptos just yet. Passing legislation that would clash with the general purpose of most of these coins is a slippery slope. Yes, stopping stopping sex traffickers is a must, but giving up a measure any measure of freedom with something that could eventually help us with privacy issues in the virtual world moving forward is an overreaction. If we are going to start passing legislation on crypto, we should also be taking the time to learn more about what it is and what it could actually become.

Like any other currencies, virtual currencies should be monitored for illegal exchanges and to insure where and what money is being exchanged.

This is a start as some of this is also untraceable cash and possible other means of bartering. Certainly where accountability can be maintained that is a means to keep banking and accounts honest as well as how those acquired monies are spent if and when it is absorbed into the US Treasury. Unfortunately, the US Treasury and Congress have not been above board and fully honest with expenditures and have ‘robbed Peter to pay Paul,’ or specifically spent out of social security to pay for other things when that money should have NEVER been touched since it was specifically intended for retired, elderly, disabled, and veterans it is important that the Fox doesn’t guard the hen house and honesty and accountability are maintained for money coming in and going out. That is the definition of a good steward.

Yes, it is right that sex and drug trafficking should be investigated by any form of government, whether federal or local. However, in regard to cryptocurrency, local governments should create and enforce laws regulating cryptocurrency, not the federal government. Everything possible should be done to stop sex and drug trafficking, but it can be done in a constitutional way. As with gun rights the tools used for illegal behavior are not the problem, the actions are, therefore there should be severe punishments and investigations on those who are involved in these crimes, but the solution is not to ban the use of cryptocurrency to those uninvolved in the crime.

Definitely. Nefarious activity will always exist, we must take action as technology progresses to stop it in it’s tracks on all fronts.

Only makes sense, shouldn't matter how it's paid for. It needs to be stopped. Men being allowed to marry young American girls (some as young as 10) for $$ needs to stop as well.they use it as a way to get here.

Every avenue & possibility in sex (and other forms of human slavery) & drug trafficking should be thoroughly investigated.

It sounds like this is a bill to study the problem. It doesn't actually do anything about the problem. This is just to find out what, if anything, should be done about it. I see no problem with this.

We have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that criminalizing drug use and sex work does not work. Stop with failed policies. Instead legalize it, tax it, and use the taxes to fund treatment programs that are evidenced based (which means research has shown it to be effective).

Why does this need much thought. The amount of money wasted by the special investigator, the shutdown, and other liabilities could easily have funded the research to degrade, reduce, and expose perpetrators of this crime and ultimately lead to their criminal persecution.

Cryptocurrencies should be regulated as they connect to the financial system underlying our businesses and government operations.

The government should be able to continue its regulation of currency with all formats of cryptocurrency, making the cryptocurrency something that requires observation. The treasury then makes the statement that all money coming or going from the US is subject, still, to local, national and international laws. Just like in real life, when currencies change hands, its always watched. So why not get the crypto out of cryptocurrency?
