house Bill H.R. 494

Making the Health Insurance Industry Subject to Antitrust Laws

Argument in favor

Health insurance companies shouldn’t be exempt from antitrust laws that would otherwise punish them for colluding and price fixing -- actions that hurt consumers by raising prices.

As a Registered Nurse who left the profession because I felt I could no longer offer good medical care due to insurance company restrictions, I heartily support any measure that will limit the reach and influence of these unnecessary middlemen we, for some reason, have turned over our health to... for their profit.

The cost of dental work is way outside the ability of the average working person or retiree! The size of the fees vary widely. Dental insurance is a joke. Everything is a credit card charging interest. The state of dental health in this country is worse even than general healthcare!

Argument opposed

By not subjecting them to antitrust law, the status quo enables health insurance companies to provide better service to consumers. It’d be foolish to eliminate the exemption.

Obamacare itself creates price fixing and harms competition as well as the consumer. The fact that health insurance can't be sold across state lines creates monopolies in individual states, Obamacare didn't change that, it only forced prices upward. Eliminate Obamacare and allow health insurance to be sold across state lines like any other product or service and real competition will be introduced thereby bringing prices down and service quality up.

Health insurance companies are struggling as a result of Obamacare. We all understand that one major goal of Obamacare is to shutdown the health insurance companies and go to a single payer system run by the federal government. We all know what happens when the government runs anything. Look at the VA scandal as a good example. It's still corrupt and efforts to clean it up are stonewalled by entrenched bureaucrats.

I don't understand why they would be exempt at all. Allowing insurance companies to collude with each other to set premiums and prices is a major contributing factor to why our country pays almost three times as much in health care expenses as other countries. We need to level the playing field and force in them to compete for business - like every other industry in this nation - fairly.

When has the health insurance industry acted in the interest of anyone but their CEO's & shareholders? If we want to resurrect our ailing & dysfunctional healthcare system--so that Malaysia & Costa Rica are not better places to have surgery than the U.S.--we must hold the industry accountable for their behavior. Citizens have no choice than to seek care for illness & injury. If we allow greed to be the basis of the delivery system, we might as well start subsidizing airfare to Asia so that American citizens can get decent healthcare a price that makes sense.

This is a Duh! But really it's time for a single payer medical healthcare system. Just put the greedy insurance companies out of business.

The insurance companies have far too much leeway currently, and they do not use it responsibly. It's time to get them and their pricing under control.

We need to just switch to single payer already

Antitrust laws are for businesses. Big Pharmas, insurance companies, and medical professionals are all in it for the money no matter what horsepoop they spew about their 'mission statements'. They should all be held to the same standards as other types of businesses.

Ordinarily I'd say keep antitrust laws in the background until there's a monopoly starting. However, health insurance companies have been colluding to raise prices for decades in such ways that would be illegal in any other industry. The notion that allowing profit making ventures to do whatever they want with no consequences is in any way good for consumers is laughable. Or would be, except that people really believe it despite it never having happened in human history. Antitrust laws should apply to all industry.

Absolutely insurance companies are in collusion with doctors as it is now try to go into your local doctors office and tell them that you want to pay cash they will refuse that it has to go through Insurance Company I'm speaking of years past but of course Obama Care has enforced this that we must use insurance. Driving up the cost for processing the insurance payments and for deductibles. More doctors are going to Wellness care which leaves out insurance payments to the doctor's office cutting out the insurance payments and processing for the doctor which adds to the cost of your visits.

Why would one industry get a carve out? We pay the highest prices in the world, they shouldn't be allowed to price gouge.
