Do Abortion Providers Need to Perform an Ultrasound and Give the Woman a Choice to View the Images?

Argument in favor

Prior to having an abortion, a woman should be provided with an opportunity to view an ultrasound if she decides she wants to see the images.

This gives the child a face. Abortion, whether you want it to be legal or not, is a very serious thing to do and shouldn't be taken lightly. This would be another step to insure the mother was confident in their decision.

I think it's HORRIBLE for people to WILLFULLY give their consent to let some BUTCHER murder their unborn child! When did we as a society decide that GENOCIDE is okay, as long as the victims reside in women's wombs?! The atheists and humanists talk about the "fetus," "a clump of cells," or the "zygote" to distract and deceive you. This generally happens when a woman is greatly distressed and vulnerable and not thinking clearly or thinking beyond her current situation. Such women don't stop and THINK that they are contemplating ENDING A HUMAN LIFE THAT HAPPENS TO BE THEIR SON OR DAUGHTER! This bill may help save some innocent lives, people! I'd much prefer to BAN ALL ABORTIONS, but until that happens, women should at LEAST come face to face with their child before they consent to kill it! Yes. My child was aborted after I made every plea to try to save my child's life. I offered to take the baby and move out of the city as well as would have no obligations. I offered up any scenario to make it work if she would only carry the baby to term. Mothers should be given the offer to see that it's a tangible living conception. I didn't have that right.

Argument opposed

A woman who is seeking an abortion shouldn’t be required to have an ultrasound performed on her, even if she doesn’t decide to view the ultrasound images.

Boy, they never let up, do they? IT'S. HER. BODY. You don't get to legislate what she does with it.

Funny how the right is all about limited government unless it involves women.

This is just another way to delay an abortion. Whether or not a person is fully informed is their own responsibility, and it is not the government's place to try and influence their decision.

Research shows that when women come for an abortion, they have already sought out information and made their decision. Almost 2/3 of women seeking an abortion ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN, so they definitely know what they are doing. Also, most abortions happen very early in a pregnancy, so a standard ultrasound is impossible. This means that women are forced to have a transvaginal ultrasound , which resembles a rape, especially if the woman does not want the procedure. Requiring additional procedures, which are not needed for medical reasons, is simply an attempt to prevent women from getting an abortion that she has a constitutional right to obtain. If you don't like abortions, don't have one. But stop trying to make medical decisions for women! She and her doctor are the ONLY ONES who get to make those decisions. NOT POLITICIANS and NOT YOU.

Needless expense. This is a traumatic experience. No one wants an abortion. Btw, how come small government doesn't apply to someone's uterus? Do men get to see 50% of their handy work? Why not use all that cash to take care of the needy kids we have?

A mandatory ultrasound provides no material benefit to make an abortion procedure safer--a pointless proposal

Until the government starts treating a fetus like an individual for tax purposes, stop treating it like an individual for "moral" purposes.

How will this help a woman decide if she wants to keep the baby or not? These tests are pressuring and intended to make women feel bad

The process of getting a pregnancy terminated is already far too drawn out and humiliating. And yet people continue to make one of the most difficult decisions a woman has to make even more traumatic. Men need to stop trying to guilt and shame women through a process they are constitutionally and legally allowed to obtain. The fact that this is even being offered is appalling and offensive. Stop trying to control and disrespect women with legislation. They already face pay inequality, less rights, less privilege, lesser treatment in the work place... if we want to lower abortion rates we need to make it easier to have children. We need to make it possible for a women to have a baby without losing her job and going into poverty. We need to offer paid family leave that is reasonable and allows mothers to bond and care for their children (as well as fathers) and we need to offer support through healthcare, financial aid, and education. Stop wasting time and legislation on useless humiliating procedures to delay the inevitable.

I agree that no one, that is within their right mind, likes abortion. However, individuals that are irresponsible with their actions need to be made aware that there is a life is growing inside of you. You made the decision not to use protection and you need be able to face the reality that you are taking a life. Exception to the aforementioned summary above would be incest and rape. If a woman makes the decision to save her life due to a harrowing pregnancy, there is no need for this. More than likely she has already viewed the child before making this anguishing decision.

This is clearly a measure to persuade the woman to not go forward with he abortion. If a woman is in the table she has thought it through and this type of action is undermining her ability to make an informed decision. Just like saying " well if you REALLY knew what it looked like you wouldn't do it"

If a woman wants an ultrasound or her physician feels it is necessary, that would be up to the two of them to discuss and for her to decide. Women do not need the state or the government or any other outside entity to tell them how to handle their own reproductive health and health choices!

Having an abortion is traumatic enough. It is her body and her decision, and she should be able to make her decision on her own.

As a millennial, abortion is the greatest tragedy of my generation. This bill will give the mother a glimpse of the dignity that the life in her womb possesses. That dignity is a human right.

Making the abortion process more "traumatizing" for the patient isn't the issue, it's the fact that yet another measure needs to be taken in order to prevent the destruction of pure, innocent lives.

I think there would be a lot less abortions if the woman could see there is a living being in her belly. Not just a bunch of cells
