Should Abortions Be Banned After a Fetal Heartbeat is Detectable?

Argument in favor

Human life begins at conception, and a fetal heartbeat is proof of life. If a fetal heartbeat (or fetal pole activity) exists then an abortion is ending a life and therefore shouldn’t be allowed. Abortion providers who knowingly end innocent lives in violation of this bill should be punished.

When you stop a person's heartbeat it is murder. The age is irrelevant.

Baby killing should never be legal no matter the length of the fetal cycle the abortion takes place.

Argument opposed

Fetal heartbeat bills are based in faulty science: the so-called “heartbeat” is actually cardiac activity in the fetal pole. This bill is far too restrictive, as it doesn’t provide exceptions for cases of rape and incest in which women would want to abort and would ban abortion too early in the pregnancy.

Insane question when children and adults are dying because they can’t afford insulin. Stop pretending to be pro anything when you vote Republican.

It should not be up to a vote. It is a woman’s decision, choice and no one else’s business.

There should be NO BAN period. Government needs to stay the hell out of Women’s vaginas. If you don’t have a vagina, you shouldn’t have any say in the matter.

Any such law would be unconstitutional. A heartbeat is not the same as viability outside of the womb. A fetus is not within the jurisdiction of the federal government and is not an individual under the law because a fetus is not viable outside of the mother’s womb and therefor is within the mother’s jurisdiction alone. The government has no authority or jurisdiction. Once the fetus is old enough to be viable outside the womb, then you might have an argument to ban an abortion IF there is mal intent with no reason. So you can take your heartbeat abortion bans and shove them where the sun don’t shine because you have no authority over me or anyone else in such regard. If you fail to understand that, prepare to be sued.

Steve “Proud Nazi” King, outstanding example of Republican “thought” on this issue. Let me be perfectly clear, unless you’re having the abortion, or performing it, it’s 100% none of your business. It’s interesting that the party of “small government” likes government large enough to tell women what they must do with their uteruses and their lives. They’re also interested in trans people’s bodily functions, and LGBTQA people’s bedrooms. As a matter of fact, let’s be honest, Republicans have never actually been for “small government.” That’s just a lie they tell to justify cutting Social Security and Medicare to fund tax cuts for themselves. It’s never been about a theory of governance. It’s always been about greed and power and how to get it by taking it from us. Rot in Hell, Steve King, you Nazi SOB, and take all your Republican brethren with you!

Strongly Opposed to HR 490 Representatives if this comes up vote No! Stay out of this most sensitive of issues; do not be steamrolled like some state legislators have been. Let those who oppose some or all form of abortions do what they wish with _their_ own bodies. In general we need flexibility and sensitivity to deal with unwanted, unplanned for pregnancy as seen fit. Points of information: * An embryo (which at 6 weeks is less than a quarter of an inch in length) with a “heartbeat” does not mean viability. The heart is far from being fully formed at this stage. * It takes a minimum of six and a half weeks for a “heartbeat” to be detectable in an embryo; this is being used by abortion opponents to try to effectively eliminate all possibility of abortion. Using the term “heartbeat” is an intentional obfuscation on the part of the proponents of this bill. In fact the mislabeled "beat" isn't audible even with a stethoscope. * A review of cultural and religious ideas regarding when human life actually begins will show that there are multiple views ranging from the moment of fertilization all the way to the moment an infant takes his or her first breath. One way of looking at HR 490 is that those favoring this bill and severely restricting abortion are seeking to impose a philosophical or, more likely, an essentially religious view falsely stated as science on the rest of American society. This is inherently unconstitutional.

Abortions are healthcare. There are a lot of politicians with heartbeats that aren’t showing any other signs of life, heartbeat isn’t an end-all measurement. Also, an electric impulse isn’t necessarily a heartbeat. And ectopic pregnancies aren’t moveable. Leave medical decisions and procedures to doctors.

Should a man’s penis and testicles be cut off after rape or incest? That would cut down on unwanted pregnancies. Stay out of my doctor’s office and away from my very personal and private decisions. Free birth control, sex education, adequate medical care for girls and women are a better means of decreasing abortion than any law.

Fetal heartbeat is a misnomer, it’s phrasing designed to tug on your heartstrings, but is rather maternal blood moving through the placenta. Medical decisions sbould be made by doctors and their patients, not by ill informed and partisan politicians.
