house Bill H.R. 4827

Should Federal Employees Furloughed Because of the Gov’t Shutdown Get Back Pay?

Argument in favor

While it’s unfortunate that this bill is even necessary, it’s not federal employees fault that Congress can’t get its act together. Those who get furloughed should receive back pay as soon as the shutdown ends like they have in the past.

The federal government needs to act as responsibly with my money as I do. Yes. Pay the folks who were furloughed, but pro-rate and take congress’ salary away for the shutdown... Re-evaluate every job in every department. The feds are living way beyond their means.

Just use the multi-million dollar payouts Sessions got from the passage of the 2017 Corporate Tax Heist to pay federal workers. That should give you all enough funding for the congressional passage of amendment 25 section 4 declaring 45 unfit for office.

Argument opposed

The federal government shouldn’t pay employees who are furloughed for work they didn’t do. If such employees aren’t prepared for the possibility of a shutdown disrupting their finances they should look for work outside the government.

Federal employees furloughed because of the drastic, underhanded blackmail should not get back pay, they should continue to get paid. Why does Congress get paid? Why do the propaganda-spreading members of the administration get paid? Anyone who follows the ineffective, ridiculous ways of our government know this 'shutdown' is purely political. Both sides are attempting to prove their point at the expense of not only the civil servants who come to work every day and do their jobs without political bias but the American people at large. Grandstanding, finger-pointing, blame-game playing, propaganda spreading and out-right lying to the public from the floor of the Capitol Building is, or should be, completely beneath the history and significance of the building alone, never mind the institution it represents. GOP-leaders blaming the Dems for this shutdown are equally to blame. According to the GOP leaders, the Dems should 'stop the shutdown by giving in' to the current DEMANDS on the table. THIS IS NOT COMPROMISE. THIS IS NOT GOVERNING. THIS IS EXTORTION. Contrary to the hype, rhetoric and propaganda, this shutdown is NOT over illegal immigration, just like the NFL players taking a knee is NOT about the military or disrespect for the flag. The military will not be funded if this CR is passed. There will be enough money to pay the active troops, but there is no money in this agreement to actually FUND THE MILITARY. STOP LYING TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE GET YOUR ASSES IN A ROOM AND WORK THIS OUT. The GOP CONTROLS what comes to the floor in both houses. You could have fixed these issues any time in the last four months. You chose to bet the Dems would fold. You guessed wrong and own this shutdown.

Personally, no paycheck certainly would be a severe penalty for any worker. However, this furlough compensation most mimics our Congress: paid every day, rain or shine and in sickness or in health. Now our Federal Government wants to bring Federal Workers up to Congressional compensation standards. As far as I know, no socialist country pays for non-work days-this doesn't apply to the elite governing class. I believe Federal Government employees are aware of shutdowns as part of the job and are prepared for short furlough periods. And everyone has heard "it's a government job," referring to being "lifetime" and "guaranteed." Only school systems foster the "best" benefits.

Hell YES!! As a Retired Federal Employee I have been though this crap more times than I can count!! Can you say December 1995? Federal Employees DID NOT cause this mess, and SHOULD NOT take the blame!! Furthermore they have bills to pay. Banks WILL NOT wait for their payments! Landlords WILL NOT wait for their payments! Etc., Etc.!!

Trump has shut down the government, just as he promised in his campaign. Use the money he is making as president through his business deals to pay of what he and his spineless republican lackeys have cost the nation.

The shutdown of our federal government is the fault of our representatives. THEY should be the ones who have to worry about getting paid. Maybe if they were penalized for each day they failed at the basic responsibilities of their positions hardworking Americans who serve the public wouldn’t have to worry about how they are going to put food on the table or keep the lights on.

It’s not the fault of the normal government employees that the Congresscreatures from the abyss can’t get their act together. The ones who shouldn’t be paid is Congress.

Government employees furloughed during the shut-down should absolutely be paid. They are not at fault.

The only federal employees who shouldn’t get pay is Congress since they caused this mess. All other employees who are just trying to do their jobs shouldn’t suffer financially when none of this is their fault.

As a federal employee who was effected by the last furlough. It is not the fault of the workers who get furloughed. We all will still have to put food on the table, gas in the car, take our kids to the doctor, and pay our bills. Can you go without your paycheck?

As far as fairness is concerned, back pay should come directly from the savings of those that caused the government shutdown ... Chuck Schumer and his band of liberal Democrats.

HELL NO. That's the whole point. A government shut down means relief for everyone else. When your livelihood is funded by stealing from citizens, this is what happens when the theft spigot is shut off. Better yet, cut EVERYONE off, without back pay.
