house Bill H.R. 4780

Should the IRS Have an Online Tax Calculator to Show How the New Tax Law Impacts You?

Argument in favor

Taxpayers are understandably curious how their individual tax liability will change because of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. It makes sense for the Treasury to an online calculator that shows individuals how their tax burden will change from 2017 to 2018.

Absolutely. You should know exactly how the Republican tax “cut” bill affects you before the election in Nov. Not after.

Yes. There should also be data showing how much of your money will buy guns and bombs, settle lawsuits, and pay to house non-violent drug offenders in private prisons.

Definitely! I’m fed up with lies that this will help the middle class! I wish politicians wore a shock collar that would react every time they lie!😡

Argument opposed

There are plenty of online tax calculators available for Americans to use, so the Treasury doesn’t need to make one. This is a political ploy to show taxpayers how much more money they’ll get to keep (or not) because of the GOP tax cuts.

What’s the next useless idea to spend money on. Be happy with your increase in your pay check and file your post card income tax

No the IRS is not in the online app business and there is no way they could produce what is requested in the time allowed. So that means they would purchase whatever is already available and they don’t have the money for that.

Most definitely. All voters should have easily accessible and understandable information on how a tax bill will effect them personally.

Yes - and any time changes are proposed to tax law a calculator should be available for the people to know how it will effect them BEFORE it gets voted on. Then they can contact their representatives and senators with an opinion on how to vote.

Not only do I want a calculator The is clear and concise, I want it to show the next 5 years. So based on the data I put in today what might my taxes look like for 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Since the tax bill that the government passed will fluctuate, some deductions will be temporary, over the next five years we need to be able to plan ahead.

The IRS has had a tax calculator for years. It helps you to adjust your W-4 so you don’t owe or pay too much in. It is down right now and it should be put back. Whether it compares the new tax plan to the old tax law is irrelevant to me. I want to see how I’m doing to know if I need to adjust my withholding.

People deserve to know how this is going to affect them, and the IRS is the best organization to set this up.

This is a necessary tool so that American voters can see whether or not their representatives were telling the truth about their claims on the tax bill. What I'd be even more eager to see is statistics from the IRS showing how much people based vs their income/net worth. Then we can see if this "middle class tax cut" was actually for the middle class.

This would take a single decent programmer 1 week maximum. This is a couple thousand dollars worth of work for a huge benefit.

Two questions: how much will that cost through the government process? How different is it from the ones that USAA and Frost Bank have already created for free?

The amount of money and effort to do this will be ridiculous and probably unhelpful

No there are enough online resources already. No need to spend money on a redundant app.

No, it will cost millions and it won’t work. Remember the ACA website disaster? April is coming soon enough.

A calculator for the new tax laws would be very helpful for future planning. We are self employed and need to plan ahead.
