Should Iranians Funding Militias & Undermining Democracy in Iraq Face Sanctions?

Argument in favor

Congress should signal the importance of deterring Iranian efforts to destabilize Iraq by codifying existing sanctions against Iranians funding militias and undermining Iraq’s economic reconstruction & democratic reforms into law.

The question is who gave them the idea that rescuers are now permanently there. Pack your bags and let them decide what kind of country they want in the 21st century

Yes it was our fault for creating the power vacuum. Better the developer you know than the one you don’t. GH Bush never said no to Saddam, even when he hinted of his intentions. So what the hell did we think would happen when we took out the only one in the region that the Iranians had to watch their back and fear as he was as the Iranians are a product of this part of the world. I know everyone who voted to invade Iraq regrets it now all you hear for the Middle East is a big sucking sound.

Argument opposed

The U.S. shouldn’t try to prevent Iran from destabilizing Iraq by funding elections or undermining economic reconstruction & democratic reforms. These sanctions are already imposed by executive order.

Congress needs to prevent Trump and his minions from doing anything in the Middle East without Congressional oversight. Trump has eliminated any possible chance of diplomatic solutions and goes right for the jugular. While this approach delights the Neocons and his base, it wreaks havoc on our allies and harms Iranian people. We need to get away from attempting regime change and identify our real enemy: Trump.

Alternative: Don’t create instability in Iraq in the first place. Leave the Middle East. Sanctions don’t work, never have, never will.

I have no desire to deal with Iran over this when our president sucks up to the Prince in Saudi Arabia whom I believe was responsible for the death of an American journalist. I'd like to sanction our president. No more Coke or grease burgers until you adjust y our views of the intelligence officers who surely know more than Trump does.

When are we going to introduce the Preventing United States Destabilization of the Middle East Act? We keep screwing up the Middle East with our unnecessary and counterproductive warfare and Iran is supposed to be the problem? We can’t even stay in the Iranian nuclear deal that we negotiated.

It would be the height of hypocrisy to sanction other countries for undermining democracy when our government is undermining democracy here at home

Gee, maybe we should have continued down the path of a former leader and give these regimes a never ending flow of money and they will finally understand their illusions of grandeur are for naught and suddenly be caring, loving regimes! We will wear them down with our good intentions. With the past being a serious indicator of future events, the answer is simply...not gonna happen. Either we squash them or we shall be squashed! If any of you truly believe we can convince them through our unequaled logic, heads are gonna roll!

Are we going to sanction the Americans that destabilized Iraq and paid/pay to influence elections there? Are we going to hold leaders accountable for the deaths and destruction?

We must hold onto, and build from the progress made in stabilizing Iraq and destroying the terrorists in that country. Iraq is now one of our closest Allies and it is imperative that we prevent it from becoming an Iranian proxy. It should be our primary goal to stymie all of Iran’s murderous goals in the Middle East and Near East Regions.

We are in no way capable or have the authority to determine what’s best for Iraqis. We have proven that we are willing to sacrifice tens of thousands of Iraqi lives for our own greedy unctuous purposes. Iran being right next to Iraq has more legitimacy than we do when it comes to influencing Iraq. The Middle East would be better off without our military and economic intervention which has produced nothing but havoc, violence, war and poverty...

Ramming it down their throats didn’t work with the Native Americans and it won’t work with the Iranians. Forcibly imposing sanctions is a form of violence, and violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. Martin Luther’s response to criticism about use of the Wittenberg Chest has something to teach us -

You can't really be serious here, can you? Who the hell made any of you king of the world? Unless the next bill will cut off military aid to Saudi Arabia, remove support for the war in Yemen AND punish MBS for the state-ordered MURDER of a permanent US citizen, this supposed noble action comes across for what it is - the latest dive into hypocrisy by the government.

I have an idea, let’s mind our own business, get out of their area and let them decide what kind of government they want. It’s gotten to the point that I’m wishing some other country would come over here and help us restore democracy.
