Should Former Members of Congress be Permanently Banned From Lobbying?

Argument in favor

Members of Congress need to put the interest of Americans ahead of special interest groups, and that becomes a lot harder when they’ve got former colleagues lobbying on behalf of those interests. Former members of Congress should be banned from lobbying.

100% yes! In fact, you would do us a total solid by banning the entire practice altogether. That would be great thanks. 👌🏼

I support capital punishment for political corruption. When your representatives enrich themselves to the detriment of their constituents, communities suffer. Corruption makes you an accessory to murder, rape, robbery, child abuse, neglect etc. So no, don’t let the last round of scumbags influence the new round of scumbags.

THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS FOR THE CONDITION OF THE CORRUPT POLITICIANS DISMANTLING OUR COUNTRY RIGHT NOW!! IT IS THESE LAWS ALLOWING THIS REVOLVING DOOR OF POLITICIANS-LOBBYISTS-CEO-MAFIA-OLIGARCHY THAT ARE DESTROYING OUR GOVERNMENT FROM WITHIN. AND NOW THEY ARE TRYING TO LITERALLY TURN OUR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC INTO AN ACTUAL AUTOCRACY WITH PUTIN AS KING AND TRUMP AS HIS PRINCE !! WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HAVE A DUTY TO PERFORM AS CITIZENS !!! IF THIS CONDITION CONTINUES AND MUELLER IS INTERFERED WITH OUR DUTY TO PROTECT THE CONSTITUTION IS OUTLINED IN THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA !!! AND IT WILL BE TIME FOR ALL LOYAL AMERICANS REGARDLESS OF AGE OR GENDER TO DO OUR DUTY !!! This is a just observation. L

Argument opposed

When a lawmaker’s time serving their constituents in Congress comes to an end, they shouldn’t be prohibited from lobbying their former colleagues. It’s unfair to restrict their future employment opportunities, especially when they have specialized knowledge.

We need to ban lobbying in general. Money should not play a part in who is represented and to what degree. How are this many adults this terrible at the one thing they were elected to do. Stop electing the greedy and self serving. Our elected members of Congress mirror our values or apathy about any kind of ethics in government. 2018 elections are a perfect time to start turning it around.

In this age of "repair" we too often unintentionally destroy what makes government work best Citizens United destroyed control of campaign financing, disclosure impetus has limited ability to negotiate and compromise In our desire to clean we sometimes throw out the baby with the bath water.

What is House Bill H.R. 4511?

This bill — the No Golden Parachutes for Public Service Act — would prohibit members of Congress from lobbying Congress after they leave office. It would apply to all lawmakers who leave Congress after this bill’s enactment, so former lawmakers who are already lobbying Congress could continue to do so.

Impact

Former members of Congress; lobbying firms; and Congress.

Cost of House Bill H.R. 4511

A CBO cost estimate is unavailable.

More Information

In-Depth: Sponsoring Rep. Rod Blum (R-IA) re-introduced this legislation after making it the first bill he introduced as a member of Congress in 2015 to prohibit members of Congress from ever lobbying Congress after leaving office:

“I firmly believe that the privilege of serving your constituents should be reward enough for Members of Congress. This bill would finally close the revolving door between Congress and special interest groups, restoring integrity to our political system and ensuring that politicians focus on representing their constituents instead of catering to lobbying groups who offer a lucrative post-electoral career.”

Absolutely! They have proven this year they are not capable of putting country above party as elected representatives. Allowing them to leave office and lobby for all their current special interest, big-dollar donors will only further diminish the voices of the people of this country. It is time to return our government back to the citizens it was designed to serve.

We need to do away with all lobbyists, they're the ones that have used our lawmakers to write bills that benefit themselves and nobody else. If our lawmakers are making deals with these scumbags, they should be removed from office. It's about time our lawmakers realized they're working for all Americans and not the top 1%.

Yes!! America is in the middle of a severe heroin epidemic. The maker of OxyContin, Purdue Pharmaceuticals got away with paying only $600 million in fines after making billions in profits from OxyContin on the backs of hardworking Americans. They told doctors that the drug was not addictive turning pain patients into opiate addicts and costing the country billions in medical expenses. When it came time to prosecute, Purdue just hired our politicians as their lobbyists. Our politicians, turned Purdue lobbyists accepted ridiculously large payoffs in return for lobbying to go easy on the pharmaceutical company. Now we, the tax payers, once again are stuck footing the bill for this disaster. The Purdue Pharmaceuticals Cartel gets to keep its enormous plunder made off of turning our friends, family, and neighbors into drug addicts. The politicians get their golden parachute, and we get to watch our communities get torn down by addiction. Had this law already been enacted we would be seeing these Pharmaceutical executives being put into prison and the drug makers would be the ones paying the cost of this enormous burden on our medical insurance system.

Representatives need to remember they were hired to work for us, not scanning for their future meal ticket. Take away incentives and maybe they could get something done in the job they currently hold.

Yes and expand to Former, Past and present Representatives, Senators, any elected Federal Employee, any appointed cabinet or department member in any position of authority. Basically anyone who was or is in the federal government in a management position should be banned for life from lobbying.
