house Bill H.R. 4478

Requiring Women to Register for the Draft

Argument in favor

If women are going to be allowed into more significant combat roles within the U.S. military, they should have to register for the draft as men do and face the same penalties for failing to register.

As the wife of a soldier, I strongly feel our country would make different choices about how we use our military if everyone shared the burden. I'm in favor of a system like Germany's, where every citizen is required to serve two years either in the military or public service. If lawmakers and voters were more connected to the people in harm's way, I believe they would be much more thoughtful about the wars we engage in.

Where's the gender equality the Left speaks so fondly of?

If women really want to be equal with men, they should be held to the same standards as men, no questions asked

Argument opposed

Women should only be required to register for the draft if they’re participating in all combat roles. Not only that, but the U.S. hasn’t used a military draft in decades, so registering is unnecessary for now.

No one should be required to register for the draft regardless of gender.

Since the Equal Rights Amendment has never passed, women are technically NOT equal under the eyes of the law. Pass the ERA first.

Maybe after we address the disparity in women's political representation and participation, occupational segregation, the gender pay gap, and the unequal distribution of household labor. Women aren't treated equally in this country, no matter which way you slice it.

For full equality, we must take the all downsides of citizenship and life with the upsides. The draft is only there for just in case we need it, which hopefully we won't again, and if we do, everyone should be required to take their chances. That's part of equality. And yes, boys in the comments who think they're sticking it to feminists, we feminists believe women should be subject to the same laws as men, including the draft, to be equal.

No one, man or women, should be made to fight a war. If the American people want war, we will make our message very clear. We will not let our government force us into another multi-trillion war game and gamble with our young male lives because the enemy "has WMDs" when they are actually looking for war profits.

Liberals and far left feminists got their way. The American people need to see the full impact of liberal policies. If the draft is enacted again, women should be included. Men don't get to choose in the time of a draft. Why should women be treated differently? Congrats, liberal feminists! This is what 'equality ' looks like.

Men should not be required to register either. If you can't get enough people to fight voluntarily, there shouldn't be a war.

We haven't need a draft since Vietnam, and when the draft was called, national outraged was sparked. We should simply do away with the draft. America has the strongest military in the world, we shouldn't be telling people who don't believe in a fight to fight anyways. Simply ditch the draft- don't turn it into a gender war.

As a female in the military, I think every American citizen should be responsible for fulfilling the call to arms should the US enter a time where the draft needs to be utilized.

Women should not be in combat roles. Therefore I will always vote against drafting them into the military, regardless if a draft is going on or not. We are not barbarians. We are Americans. We defend our women. Their roles in the military are much needed in intelligence, but not combat.

I do not think they should be required. However, I think they should be ALLOWED to register for the draft. They may not wish to go directly into active service but would be willing to join the fight if needed.

We can either open the draft to include women, or abolish it altogether (which is what I would personally choose.) Either one would help ensure gender equality in the military.
