house Bill H.R. 402

Should a Concealed Carry Permit Allow a Person to Carry Their Gun In Other States Where It’s Allowed?

Argument in favor

This bill resolves a problem that many states and concealed carry permit holders had encountered and allows permit holders to abide by state laws without fear of prosecution.

I agree with Countable member Patrick Mike, who said: "Does crossing a city or State line limit my Freedom of Speech, my Freedom of Religion, my search-and-seizure or self-incrimination protections or my right to legal representation? OF COURSE NOT! So, why are my Second Amendment rights somehow negotiable? This is a simple constitutional question. No city or State has the right to limit the citizenry on this issue. The fact that it is being debated demonstrates how far our government has wandered from the Constitution."

Under full faith and credit for the people of the United States, no matter your stance on guns, forcing citizens to get separate legal documents for every state is the same as being forced to get a different driver's license in every state, and thusly, is unconstitutional.

Argument opposed

States have differing requirements for concealed carry permit holders to obtain their licenses, and traveling permit holders may not bother to comply with the law of states they visit.

Concealed weapons should be outlawed. Police have enough trouble figuring out who the perpetrator is now. If I see someone in WM with a gun how do I know what their intentions are. This is not the Wild West. Gun laws in this country are absolutely crazy. You want to own a gun, fine. Keep it locked up in your home. The idea that the second amendment guarantees the right to bear an arsenal is ludicrous. The only good guys with guns are law enforcement and the military.

This will only work if conceal carry requirements are standardized across the country. So, federal gun regulation, or no state to state transfer. You pick.

This isn't about the 2nd amendment it's about concealed carry between state borders. States have different requirements and laws pertaining to concealed carry.

If you've passed a background check and have been granted a concealed carry then you should be able to carry in any state that it is allowed. Especially if you are military. The reason for this being that members of the Military face several if not many Permanent Change Of Station orders throughout their careers and for many Soldiers, Marines,Airmen and sailors they have to turn in their weapons upon entering their new home state and re file for permits which not only take time but cost money. Also when traveling to different states for schools, leave or other reasons to be able to have legal means of self protection in these uncertain times would put many service members at ease. (Not to mention everyday civilians traveling for work and vacation)

We need a national carry permit or full reciprocity.

Owning multiple licenses for different states is cumbersome and redundant. If you have already been vetted and authorized to conceal carry by a licensing official, why do it 49 more times?

While I am usually an advocate for the states to have their own laws, I believe that there are some laws that should be consistent throughout the states and this is one of them. If we believe that it is the people's right to keep and bear arms, then it should be throughout each state.

It only makes sense for a concealed carry permit to be valid across state lines, holding that such state allows concealed carry with such a permit.

A concealed carry permit should not even be required; the 2nd amendment should not have restrictions. Instead, people who use a firearm to commit acts of violence, or threaten acts of violence, and does so not in the defense of themselves, their property, others, or to deter tyranny, should be appropriately punished. As to the form of punishment, the punishment should fit the crime.

No. This is not a marriage license, these are people carrying deadly weapons. This would completely undermine gun control legislation in states that are enacting common sense regulations by opening the door for making claims that state A's laws apply in state B, despite state B's laws on the matter.
