house Bill H.R. 401

Extending the Ban on Prisoner Transfers Out of Gitmo for Two More Years

Argument in favor

People are at Guantanamo because they posed and threat, and American lives were lost to put them there. This bill ensures that only those that do not pose a threat to the U.S. government can be released from custody.

These people are in Guantanamo for a reason. They should stay there until their threat is neutralized.

Gitmo prisoners are not US citizens. Therefore it makes sense to hold these prisoners somewhere other than the continental US. In a real war of winners and losers, I say shoot them all and move on. This is a sure way to also save money.

Argument opposed

Guantanamo bay stands directly opposed to this country's core values. It is an institution that runs on trampled civil liberties and human rights violations. The president made a promise eight years ago — it's time to end this.

The ban should be ended. This is another instance in which the Republicans agreed that GITMO should be closed. But then Obama was elected in 2008, and because GOP decided to obstruct everything Obama did, then they suddenly were against it. Keeping Gitmo open is causing more terrorism, not deterring it.

We've been trying to squeeze blood out of that rock for years with little to nothing to show for it. Time to put the rock down.

Almost every Gitmo detainee released by Obama has violated the conditions of their release and returned to terrorism.

Guantanamo Bay continues to hurt us domestically and in foreign affairs. The continual operation is unconstitutional and pulling out looks good internationally as well as being good for better relations with Cuba.

We have been told that the detainees in Guantanamo Bay are too dangerous to be transferred onto american soil but given some of the extremely violent criminals which our jails already hold does anyone take that charge seriously? What is an Al Qaeda terrorist going to do in a Federal Maximum security facility than say a member of the Mexican Drug Cartels couldn't?

This is just one huge set up for people that hate us - the Americans. Why have an area to detain them if they're probably using it is their base?

Prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are there for a reason they are a threat to National Security of the United States and our allies. The war on global terrorism will be a generational war and if keeping them in prison saves even one life and the suffering it causes to families it is worth the cost. If you don't want to die or be caged like the animals terrorist are then don't murder innocent people or support terrorism.

The inmates should be either tried consistent with due process, repatriated or transferred. Clearly any dangerous terrorist that's committed a triable offense should be charged, tried and hopefully imprisoned. I appreciate fully the safety concerns, but to the extent possible we need to abide by the rule of law.

It's absolutely hypocritical, and a waste of money to continue use of this holding pen. Just dissolve it already, if something doesn't work shouldn't you try something else?

If we are so uncomfortable with the way in which these prisoners are held that we cannot even sanction their treatment within our own borders than something is wrong. Terrorists should be treated harshly. But we should be able to do this while following US laws regarding prisoner treatment.

There are many people in guantanomo that were never charged with a crime. There are cases of mistaken identity and they sill haven't been released.

Personally it seemed like they put a lot of thought and effort into this bill so that only the truly dangerous criminals a forced to stay.
