SWAMP FLYERS Act: Banning Political Appointees From Using Taxpayer Dollars on Chartered Flights For Business Travel

Argument in favor

Taxpayers shouldn’t have the foot the bill for political appointees flying around the country on chartered, private jets unless there are truly no alternatives. This bill would put a permanent stop to wasteful travel practices by senior officials.

Fly commercial airlines. Flying around in personal chartered flights is a wasteful expense that is deplorable when you take money away from Medicare for the elderly and poor, and healthcare from children to pay for it.

Question is worded poorly, lots of people with same opinion answering differently. No private jets for politicians or cabinet members, I say they can only use public transit, maybe that will give them an incentive to improve the train system across the US.

Don’t insult the American people by claiming to be fiscally responsible and then wasting hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars pampering yourselves with luxuries at our expense. Enough talk. We want to see action. Get it right or get out.

Argument opposed

While this bill wisely provides some exceptions to the outright ban, like if there’s no commercial flights to a cabinet member’s destination, on balance it’ll make it harder for senior political officials to travel for work.

Flying commercial is not always the most efficient. Sometimes, even in business, a private plane is needed. It should never be used for personal travel but, I agree it should be on the table for special circumstances.

What is House Bill H.R. 3876?

This bill — known as the SWAMP FLYERS Act — would prohibit federal funds from being used to pay the official business travel expenses of any senior political appointee who uses a non-commercial, private, or chartered flight. Exceptions would be made if no commercial flight was available for the travel in question, or for any travel on aircraft owned or leased by the government. The traveler would have to certify that to Congress under penalty of perjury.

The bill’s full title is the Stop Waste And Misuse by Presidential Flyers Landing Yet Evading Rules and Standards Act.

Impact

Senior political officials; taxpayers; and Congress.

Cost of House Bill H.R. 3876

A CBO cost estimate is unavailable.

More Information

In-DepthSponsoring Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) introduced this bill to prohibit taxpayer funds from being used on official travel via private jets by senior political appointees:

“I can't believe we have to introduce a bill like this, but multiple Trump cabinet officials apparently believe taxpayer funds can be used for personal travel benefits.  This culture of corruption in the Trump Administration must stop. Secretaries Price and Mnuchin, and Administrator Pruitt owe the American people an apology, and they should pay back the costs of their luxury travel on the taxpayer's dime.  Since Secretary Price's actions are so egregious, he should resign immediately. The Trump Administration has already enlarged the swamp, but the tremendous disrespect shown to taxpayers by these senior officials is ridiculous. SAD!”

This legislation has the support of nine cosponsors in the House, all of whom are Democrats.

Of NoteSeveral members of the Trump administration have come under fire for using private, chartered flights that incurred a significant cost to taxpayers and resulted in the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

My preference would be for this to specify military flights as well and include all officials not just senior officials. It is time for the government to understand they are part of us, not better than us and if they can't come to grips with that they must move on. Once upon a time service in the government was an honor and a privilege not a get rich scheme on the taxpayers dollar.

How can you justify wasteful government spending while trying to gut Medicare and safety net programs, environmental protections, women’s health initiatives, child care programs, reasonable timely & compassionate disaster response etc. Your priorities need serious adjustment!

It’s a sad, but accurate, comment on this Administration’s entitled view. Here’s an idea: have the wealthy campaign contributors foot the bill for Administration’s travel. They should be required to keep their bought-and-paid-for Governmental employees in the luxury manner to which they are accustomed

I think it’s completely wrong for tax payer dollars to be spent on luxuries like this m. When the government owns many planes and taking a commercial flight is cheaper. We pay taxes to sustain America and help people who can’t help themselves, not to give politicians a free ride to luxury.

Why should the Cabinet get to rack up ~ 2 million bucks to for flights that can be made via commercial airlines? They spend the money then gripe because Medicaid and healthcare cost too much. These people are beyond horrible. They all have more money than God. Now I know why. The American citizens are paying for their privileged life style. I am done with these ignoramuses putting my country men last.
