Should Taxpayers Be Able to Donate to the Border Wall’s Construction Instead of a Public Fund for Presidential Campaigns?

Argument in favor

Given Democrats’ staunch opposition to the wall, it’s unlikely that federal funding for the border wall will materialize. Allowing taxpayers to direct $3 or $6 of their tax money (depending on their filing status) to the wall will allow those who support it to help with the wall’s construction.

It is up to the people. It is up to each individual. We are free people who can choose to do so or not.

Let people donate what they want to whomever they want. If you earned your money, you should be able to spend it how you like. @RjGoodman: agreed, what do we need congress for?Why have a house of representatives that are career politicians, that come from politician families... How can they represent a people with whom they have nothing in common?

The people proved they are willing and wanting when the go fund me page came up during the shut down I believe it was. Plus, why is everyone arguing about the people that want the wall donating to it prevents a tax increase on the people that don’t want the wall. It's not a bad idea when people that want it put in their money willingly versus taking it through taxation forcefully.

Argument opposed

The border wall is opposed by many Americans and advocacy organizations. It also negatively impacts the environment and endangered species along the U.S.-Mexico border. Given these concerns, funding for it shouldn’t be pushed through via this, or any other, legislation.

Mark Green, what a ball-less and totally asinine proposal. Do not start using our tax forms as a platform for endorsing yours nor any other political positions. Using these forms to promote any political position should be illegal if it is not actually illegal already. ... ... Otherwise, I propose adding a third button allowing us to voluntarily contribute to a “Remove Corrupt Republicans Fund”. I would definitely contribute to that! ... ... Republicans never supported funding for the wall, ever. The fully Republican Congress and the Republican Senate when Republicans lost the House flat out refused to fund trump’s vanity wall. So you want to screw with tax forms to divert tax dollars from funding elections to fund something that your Congress flat out refused to support? Nonsense. Don’t take money from the deluded to support a trump manufactured crisis for a wall that is easily and demonstrably climbed over, under and through. If there were ever any documented capture of the ‘hoards’ of drug lords, cartel enforcers, crazed gang members or human traffickers that was the basis for building the wall, you might have a case. There were none reported and if there were any captures they certainly never reached the ‘marauding hoard’ levels that were supposed to be streaming trough our un-walled border. Stop trying to continue stirring up interest in this blatant, deluded fantasy- particularly by defacing our tax forms. I expect much more responsible behavior from an elected legislator. You make Republicans look like conspiring nimrods and frankly, as embarrassments for our country.

C’mon, if we pay for all of our government projects via donations, what the hell do we need Congress for? More congressional bullshit.

How many times does the public have to say no wall? A wall may keep some out, but if there’s a will, there’s a way. The wall that is already there has holes cut in it using a couple of hundred dollars worth of power tools. If they want to get in they will.

Goddammit, I am SO fuquing tired of being asked about one cockamamie scheme after another for financing and building that #%^*+ wall and it’s starting to exceed the limits of my meds. That +*^%# Wall will never work, no matter how it’s built or financed. Hells’s bells, immigrants are already cutting through it with cordless drills! Look, the ONLY principle need to reform a corrupt immigration system is this: They live here, they work here, they stay here. Period. End of sentence.

NO. THERE SHOULDN’T BE A WALL. It is illogical. It’s a fiscal (unfathomably expensive), diplomatic (obviously with Mexico and tribal lands, but it looks terrible to most of the world), and ecological (111 Endangered Species) disaster in the making. That we are trying to honor a capricious statement is mind-boggling. If we are questioning if we have to cut social security or Medicare and Medicaid, then we don’t have the fiscal capacity to fund this wall. This goes through Americans’ lands, including public and tribal lands. Those lands are promises to our people that should be kept. There are 111 Endangered Species that depend on the habitats this wall will destroy. It will block migratory paths for vital animals, whether they walk or fly. Many flying animals only fly so high, and this would block them. Truly, the push to destroy the Endangered Species Act only makes sense when pushing to land grabs like this. Reducing our biodiversity causes all beings in a ecosystem to become sicker. Protecting biodiversity protects the health of all in an ecosystem. So, this is also a threat to public health. Also, this simply won’t be effective. Boats, ladders, shovels, and planes all exist. There are so many logical reasons not to support the wall. The only real logical one for the wall is pandering to a certain group.

As a former Tax Preparer I don't even like Tax Checkoffs, including the one for Presidential Campaigns which was originally to allow the low income taxpayer a way to donate to the Candidates a small amount of their tax bill, and the Candidates were supposed to limit their spending from Large donors. It has become a Petty Cash fund for the Political Parties in many cases also on the STate level, and is not only used for the General Election anymore but also for Primaries and the National Conventions of the Parties, and so has become a way to raid on the Treasury. It as also become a way for Politicians to avoid appropriating funds that they don't want to or in this and similar cases on the state level, case can't get passed.

The wall is an ineffective way to manage immigration. What is needed is a comprehensive border security & immigration initiative using up-to-date technologies to monitor borders and manage immigration which should be prioritized & funded through the federal budget along with healthcare, education, gun control, etc! Not covertly repurposing defense or FEMA money, or soliciting private donations!

We should be allowed to decide where we want to invest our hard earned money! I choose what charities I donate to, why can’t I donate to the wall? I want the wall and would gladly donate.
