Should the Family of a Deceased Veteran be able to Request a Weekend Funeral at a National Cemetery?

Argument in favor

Veterans risked their lives for this country while they served, it’s only appropriate that they receive a funeral at a national cemetery on a non-federal holiday weekend at their family’s request.

They should be able to have the funeral whenever they like - period.

This allows for the family and friends of our fallen heroes to more easily pay their respects. There is little to no reason to reject this, as our fallen servicemen and women deserve to have a funeral whenever they (or their family) so choose. It is the least we can do to pay our respects and give thanks for what they have done.

Perhaps more could be added to the rotation so some have the weekend off while others serve.

Argument opposed

The VA shouldn’t have to allow deceased veterans to buried on weekends at national cemeteries just because the veteran’s next-of-kin requested it.

As a marine who helps put these brave, honorable servicemen to rest at Arlington National Cemetery almost every day during the work week, I will tell you that having Saturday and Sunday off gives us enough time to rest and prepare our gear and materials to do our job again for the following 5 days to come. Our job is one of the most (if not the MOST) honorable job in the marine corps, and to sustain our professionalism, this is how we maintain it.

Being the son of a veteran I cannot speak from all but he would not want other military personal to lose precious times with there loved ones while they are already giving so much.

I am a Veteran. You need to have some downtime between funerals for maintenance and care. Military Funerals 7 days a week cannot be supported long term In my opinion.

I realize working weekends is a lot to ask but maybe, just maybe our vets deserve for other government employees to be inconvenienced by their jobs

I agree with the Marine who said they need the time prepare the gear and need time off for their families as well. I think the veterans would understand.

The veteran risked and possibly gave up their life for the service of their country. The least the VA can do is make a difficult situation more tolerable by being more accommodating to the families.

I can't believe someone would even try to block accommodating the request of next of kin of someone who died in service to our country.

Their family member gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and the least our country can do in return is to make there funeral services as convenient as possible for the families and friends.

Additional funding would be required to provide adequate downtime for the service members who perform the ceremonies. And they can't just be bought. The men and women of the Army's Old Guard, and equivalent in other services, are highly trained and skilled professionals. If Congress can fund the staff and training required than weekend services should be added. Currently, I believe the determination is left up to the commander, as it should be.

Small state veterans cemeteries don't have the personnel (mostly volunteers) to provide convenience services. I'm a vet, have been to too many funerals at veterans cemeteries and still say "no" to unfunded mandated weekend funerals at every veterans' cemetery.

We perform military funerals on Saturdays and holidays if required at our state veterans cemetery here in Nevada. We use veterans as honor guards and assistance from National Guard members if requested. We do as good if not better than some regular military members at the funerals. Yes your kin served but they all don't need to be at federal cemeteries, state funded ones are just as honorable.
