Does the President Need to Develop a Strategy for Keeping Terrorists Off Social Media?

Argument in favor

The President needs to finally develop a strategy for stopping terrorists’ use of social media as a tool to recruit and spread propaganda after committing to do so in 2011, and Congress needs updates on actions the Administration has taken.

A strategy here seems like a good idea. But the devil will be in the details...

This bill is NOT an infringement on our first amendment rights. It merely requires the president to provide a detailed report to Congress regarding the use of social media by terrorist networks. Furthermore, it enhances the relay of information between the federal government and social media companies regarding terrorist movements and communication on social media sites. This is the 21st century, people - wars aren't just fought on battlefields anymore. Relax, the government is not coming after you nor are they trying limit the freedoms of law-abiding citizens.

We should limit the amount of recruitment that terrorist organizations are using via social media. However, I don't support the government censoring or restricting the Internet in general to eliminate terrorists usage of social media.

Argument opposed

While more needs to be done about the influence of terrorist groups on social media, the federal government shouldn’t be interfering with the relationship between a company and the free speech rights of its users.

While terrorism is a terrible thing that should be stopped at all costs, it would be a better idea simply to destroy them in a war. Plus, social media is a global thing, and the U.S. has no right to claim ownership.

I don't TRUST Barack Hussein Obama to develop such a strategy, given his OBVIOUS BIAS in favor of Muslims, Communists, globalists, cop haters and racists, and his obvious bias AGAINST Constitutional conservatives, Christians, gun owners and patriots who are trying to uphold and defend our Republic from foreign AND domestic enemies! Why don't the House and Senate Committees on Homeland Security have subcommittees to develop this strategy?!

As long as they are not U.S. Citizens it's fine but if they are it's unconstitutional to take away someone's rights without due process

Absolutely. Maybe not keep them off but keep this network out of America. Young and naive people see this and they get drawn to ISIS. We can't help naivety of some people, but the least we can do is keep the bad guys out of our systems

Fact, ISIS's social media propaganda is being used to recruit and radicalize Muslims. Yet having a point of origin to obtain a warrant(through a judge), track, follow and intercept suspected foreign terrorist via social media, is a wiser decision verses closing down those lines of communication.

No way no how! The fed needs to stay away from Social Media entirely! This "president" must not be allowed to interfere with any type of social interactions between Americans ... his record of attacking our Constitutional liberties is proof that he and his administration would like nothing less than to be able to monitor, regulate and control the flow of open communication that exists online; this is yet one more affront to the rights of Americans to engage in the free flow of ideas without the fear of government reprisals, and must not even come under consideration! I strongly vote NAY on this one!

What we need to do is find a way to understand their encryption. Same way we broke Enigma and beat the Nazi's in WWII

So how can the #POTUS keep terrorist off social media? Can the #POTUS instruct "Social Media" to delete terrorists? What about the 1stA? Would court orders be required or can #POTUS direct removal by Executive Order by waving his scepter?

I thought anonymous was taking care of this for us? Joking aside, we should not be meddling in the affairs of free speech or we risk becoming like other communist state run media countries.

The President ca request that social remove speech and speakers that violate 1st amendments (inciting riots, overthrow of government, urging felonious behaviors) but he can go no further without violating the rights of Americans.
