house Bill H.R. 36

Should the U.S. Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks Of Pregnancy (With Exceptions)?

Argument in favor

Unborn babies can feel pain after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Abortions outside of that timeframe should be outlawed to ensure the safety and well-being of unborn life.

This bill takes into account mother's health as well as rape and incest. I believe in the woman's right to choose, but i also believe that a line must be drawn. When a fetus can live outside the womb, it is not longer a choice, it is a child. I also believe that there needs to be more education and conversation in this country to decrease the unwanted pregnancy and abortion rate rather than doing so through regulation. Rape culture must also be addressed. I believe that there is too much time spent discussing abortion regulation and not enough time focused on the real conversations that need to be happening.

Birth control is freely available to all. 1 million abortions a year is out of control.

My opinion is that abortion is murder. Soon I hope that the culture sees that abortion is worse than slavery.

Argument opposed

The male legislators who proposed this bill should not have a say on what women choose to do with their bodies. This bill tramples on women's reproductive rights.

I am an ObGyn. The only women really getting abortions at that point in a pregnancy have just found out at their 19/20 week ultrasound that there is a severe congenital anomaly or malformation. Banning abortion for those women would be cruel. Stay out of women's reproductive choice please. In addition, if you've ever seen a child born at 22-28 weeks you know that they have extremely high morbidity and mortality, especially in the sub-24 week GA fetuses. Viability is not a set point and outcomes are not the same so please stop trying to regulate it and allow professionals with medical decision making capacity to do their jobs.

The only reason people have abortions at that stage is because there are problems with either the mother's health or the fetus. Forcing women and their families to suffer because of some misguided ideas it's inhumane.

This is a slippery slope to banning abortion all together. Keep it legal! Keep it safe!

Medically necessary abortions should be available to women after 20 weeks. Doctors should feel comfortable performing them and not scared to lose their license to practice medicine.

There are a myriad of reasons why a late term abortion may be medically necessary; matters pertaining to a person's health should not be restricted.

This bill is unconstitutional under the 4th amendment. It also places an undue burden on the mother, which is illegal under Roe v. Wade.

Women should make those decisions themselves with the aid of their doctor and their spouse/family. The government shouldn't be in the business of banning medical procedures for religious reasons. Leave your religion at home where it belongs.

Late term abortion is very rare and usually used to save the life of the mother. In addition, any anti-abortion legislation should be accompanied by regulations that alleviate poverty, strengthen education, and provide birth control.

Abortion after 20 weeks is almost exclusively done on wanted pregnancies where either the fetus is not viable or the mother's life is in danger. Banning abortion after 20 weeks is at best an invitation for emotional suffering on the part of many families, and at worst a death sentence for pregnant women.

All sorts of circumstances can be involved. Blanket rules are never good. Why do we care more for the unborn than we care for the living. More effort should be given to helping people to prevent unwanted pregnancy. In the case of rape, why would you force a woman to have a baby she didn't plan for or want? Anti abortion is just mean and it is un-Christian.

What about the woman carrying the child? Most late term abortions are to save the mother from complications that can risk their life. It's emotional turmoil to make that kind of decision but it's a decision that should not be taken away from a woman who SHOULD have the reproductive rights to decide.

There will always be situations when medical intervention is needed after 20 weeks. No woman ever wants an abortion but it should be between the woman, her partner, her doctor and if she so chooses her religious leader. Not the government, ever.

Instead of further restricting abortion, I urge Congress to heed the voices of voters across this nation and make reproductive healthcare a basic right for women everywhere. That means expanding access to services and abandoning the folly of defunding Planned Parenthood. The right to an abortion was already decided by Roe vs Wade - let's quit wasting time with it already.

This could open the floodgates for numerous legal hold ups for sick women in danger due to dangerous pregnancies. This is a dangerous bill.

Late-term abortions are never taken lightly. If a woman has an abortion at this stage in her pregnancy, it is likely that the child was wanted, and that carrying the pregnancy to term would pose a serious health risk to the mother or child. The right to protect the health of the mother must be preserved.
