Should Same-Sex Couples Be Able to Jointly File Federal Tax Returns & Get Retroactive Refunds?

Argument in favor

Same-sex couples in certain states that legalized same-sex marriage early, such as Massachusetts, were forced to file separate tax returns for nearly a decade and should have access to retroactive refunds.

ALL ARE EQUAL UNDER LAW. Keep the tired religious bigotry out of our legal system. They had these kind of arguments over interracial couples too. Guess what? If there is a legal benefit to marriage, all marriages get it whether it adheres to anybody’s personal opinions or not.

Yes. Are they American Citizens? Are “All men created equal”? Are they human beings? Then yes, they should have the same rights as White Americans and White Republicans and Black and Brown People too. Republicans, you disgust everyone who are not you. YOU are the weakest link. Conservatism harms and kills everyone.

Argument opposed

Same-sex couples shouldn’t be able to retroactively claim tax refunds from years before the Supreme Court’s decision when they filed individual tax returns.

How about getting the government completely out of the marriage business

This would be a logistical disaster for the IRS and would be rampant with fraud and abuse. No thank you.

Marriage is a covenant instituted by the LORD, the State does not belong in marriages at all. Do not provoke the LORD, for the cup of His wrath is at the rim, and you shall be judged, tonight, tomorrow or after death, repent or perish, He shall make a footstool of His enemies.
