Should CHIP Plans Provide Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment?

Argument in favor

Mental health and substance abuse treatment are important components of health care. CHIP, as a federal health plan for pregnant women and children, should include this coverage as part of holistic care for its enrollees.

If we don’t begin to get serious about treating mental health issues then we will have more tragedies occur.

The mental health issue in our nation is ever increasing. It is important that we actively take steps toward remedying it. Helping young people afford the care they need to get through mental illness is one such necessary step.

We aren't just talking about counseling here, we're talking about actual treatment of mental disorders like depression. Last time I checked a church can't treat you for that. Also, if we're going to blame mental illness for all the mass shootings, don't you think identification and treatment of said mental illnesses should be offered to children while they are developing? Frankly, it should be required by all healthcare providers but that's another story.

Argument opposed

Mental health systems are built at the state, rather than the federal, level. Changing the mental health coverage requirement in CHIP — a federal program — could interfere with states’ requirements.

I understand that children have a difficult life with the increase in bullying and the pressures society placed on them. However, there are support groups, Churches, and the biggest positive impact on children is from a well structured and healthy family who are able to talk about these sorts of things. Honestly, the support groups and Churches are already available and though America needs to reestablish a positive living environment, there is no need for funding for mental and physical health insurance for CHIP recipients. It sounds harsh, but in a realist point of view, use the programs and structures already available, stop trying to increase funding with funding we do not need or have to be spending.

Call me when we're willing to treat all people equally. Men are not less worthy of care than women and no one becomes less valuable as a person at 18.

ALL medical plans should have mental health parity- including substance abuse treatment. I’m a voter in Ohio’s 12th congressional district and I support this bill.

Yes, and Medicare For All would address this too. Depression and mental health issues are created by or exasperated by Conservative oppression upon the citizens. As the Conservatives take away more health benefits and make life more miserable and less opportunistic, people, including children are seeking to self medicate to find relief from the oppression and depression. Conservatism ideologies harms our children and families. Conservatism kills! Make America Great Again! Abolish conservatism.

This would help curb the opioid epidemic. And we need to do everything possible to help vulnerable and addicted people.

Treat the children for their issues. Kids treatment should not be limited. Whole body, whole mind treatment for everything that needs attention.

Mental Health is an imperative part of health care and should be included as mandatory coverage in all plans, especially for children and young adults.

Kids needs to have access to all areas of healthcare. Mental health must be included in that even if it means a higher tax rate.
