Would Allowing Members of the Armed Forces Working at Recruiting Centers to Carry Guns Protect Them From Attackers?

Argument in favor

Preventing all members of the military from carrying guns at recruiting stations makes them a vulnerable target for those who wish to harm them. Letting officers and NCOs to carry weapons gives them tools to protect against attacks like Chattanooga.

I'm all for it, but I think they need to qualify just as often as front line troops

The arguments against are absurd.. If our armed forces cannot be trusted to be armed, then massive recruitment changes need to be made. If they can, then let them be armed.

Argument opposed

This bill is an overreaction to relatively isolated incidents. There aren’t very many attacks on recruiting centers, and arming military personnel could have the unintended consequence of endangering more people caught in the crossfire.

Adding more firearms to the mix will not save lives

When will this country stop trying to solve every problem, especially those related to gun violence, with more guns? I will never support increased lawful distribution of firearms. Anyone who's anti-military is basically anti violence, so I don't know where your logic is here. The again, do I ever? Also, these are isolated incidents that have more to do with mental illness than with growing national distaste for military activity.

Sorry but this is an overreaction. More guns are not the solution. The mental health system of this Country must be updated and reinforced. Guns will not help.

We allow these men and women to handle some of our most modern and sophisticated weaponry while in battle, but we can't trust them to carry a pistol at home? I think disarming our "armed" forces at home is both ridiculous and ironic.

Let the DoD decide that and keep knee-jerking politics out of the mix. More guns are not the answer. We've seen how that goes.

While I am loathe to encourage additional firearms in crowded public spaces, having served myself I can vouch for the level of training involved. It is infinitely preferable to have trained and disciplined soldiers carrying weapons than to have open carry advocates who are simply looking for an excuse to pull the trigger and feel like a hero.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to assume that a military officer is going to know more about handling a firearm than a civilian would. So I don't see a problem in allowing military officers to act in certain situations militarily. With guns.

The president has armed guards protecting him, so too do our guys and gals who are protecting our country need the same right! The president should make at least one useful executive order while, holding office.

All military members should be allowed to protect not only themselves but the ones around them. No debate needed. People are trying to justify that we don't need to do this because of those who commit these act are mentally ill in which they aren't. They are supporting a terrorist organization because of some blind agenda they have been promised and it makes them feel part of something big. Making that person feel special when they probably were not treated that way before.

Why shouldn't they? "The right to bear arms shall not be infringed"

It's a long time coming! The weapons are not for enforcement actions, just self defense. Couple arming our service men and woman with appropriate physical security measures and you have a roadmap towards a safer environment.

I agree with this bill in principle but disagree with pulling the authority away from the Department of Defense

Yes they are trained in a responsible way to use and safeguard their weapons and can protect themselves and others in the center.

One would have to be insane to vote for this. Not to mention that it is unconstitutional to arm soldiers for domestic work.

More guns doesn't make it safer...instead we should work towards safer gun laws nationwide to reduce mass shootings
