Should the Federal Gov’t Reaffirm the Status of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s Reservation?

Argument in favor

The Dept. of the Interior’s decision not to affirm the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe’s reservation’s status has thrown the tribe into turmoil and caused economic hardship. Affirming the tribe’s reservation will allow the Mashpee to move forward with their development plans for the tribe’s rightful lands, including a $1 billion casino in Taunton, Massachusetts.

It’s tribal land. They should have the right to use it as they please.

It's the tribe's land, the tribe gets to decide if they build a casino or not. And this should apply equally to *all* reservations, without needing their own individual legislation. To oppose this bill because it might decrease another casino's revenue is the epitome of cronyism, and is ethically unacceptable.

Argument opposed

The Mashpee Wampanoag’s plan to build a $1 billion casino on its reservation will disrupt both the town of Taunton, Massachusetts, where the casino would be located, and neighboring Rhode Island, which could lose millions in gambling revenue. Additionally, the Mashpee Wampanoag don’t have a legal right to request a land into trust conversion based on existing federal law.

We need to give Native Americans more power over their reservations.

I believe the general public does not understand the finances behind Indian casinos. There are very few tribes that share the wealth with their members by distributing profits from casinos. Most are run by a select few, who also reap the benefits of profit. MGM, Wynn Group and Caesar’s are also taking a big chunk of those profits through management contracts.

I admit that I do not know the full history of this and cannot truly offer an informed opinion. However, since we have classified Native American tribal lands and peoples as sovereign nations unto themselves; How can we honorably and in good faith simply disregard that classification when it becomes convenient?

👍🏻👍🏻Affirming The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribes Status. 👍🏻👍🏻 The Dept. of the Interior’s decision not to affirm the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe’s reservation’s status should be reversed, as the DOI’s action, has thrown the tribe into turmoil and caused economic hardship. Affirming the tribe’s reservation will allow the Mashpee to move forward with their development plans for the tribe’s rightful lands, including a $1 billion casino in Taunton, Massachusetts. I’d recommend that the following are included in the agreement: * That the management REMAINS in the tribes hand without outsiders influencing their operation. * That the DOI establishes an method of monitoring the casinos operation. * That the revenue generated at the Casino 🎰 are allocated creditably, to benefit all members, of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Members. * Additionally that the revenues generated will be allocated to provide medical and police support to tribe. SneakyPete......... 👍🏻👍🏻Casino👍🏻👍🏻. 5.15.19.......

The land belonged to the Native Americans originally; they shared it with us, it’s only fair to let their descendants keep some land.

Technically, the whole U.S. belongs to the natives. We shouldnt be keeping them from developing their own land. Give them what they want.

We have done enough, irreparable harm to First Nation people, we need to do all we can to recognize we stand on stolen land and when we can return the land to those who inhabited and cared for it before we occupied it, the sooner we can embody true justice.

We stole their land we stole their culture and forced white culture on them and now they are in a position where they can actually make money and we're telling them no. You can't have the land we have allowed so graciously (SARCASM) allowed you to keep that is inadequate to provide a good life for you and use it like white men would to build casinos to make money for your people to improve their lives. That would be highly on American (YES MORE SARCASM). For those of you who do not understand the term sarcasm--- look it up.

These people have paid with their blood to white men, leave them alone and keep out of their land which by the way we took most of it from them.

Honor the agreements the government made with the tribes. I used to think breaking treaties and stealing land from Native Americans was a thing of the past, but it’s apparent it’s still happening. Affirm it’s their land and let them do what they want
