Should Workers Get 2 Hours of Paid Leave to Vote on Election Day?

Argument in favor

Many hourly workers can’t afford to take time off work to vote if that time is unpaid. This means that these people’s voices aren’t heard in elections, and makes voting a luxury that only the well-off can afford. This shouldn’t be the case — everyone who wants to, and is eligible to, vote should be able to do so.

This would be a first step, but an even better approach in my opinion would be to give the day as a holiday only to people who went to vote. And adopt a similar system to other major democracies to reduce risk of corruption by selecting random voters to ask them to volunteer to man the voting booth for the day (including counting) and give them a second beaverton day extra to compensate (similar to Jury duty).

I support this whole heartedly. I would rather see people getting the whole day off to vote, but for people in occupations where that is especially difficult to manage, this should (hopefully) help considerably.

This is already part of many union bargaining agreements. Agreements between the unions and the employer. Why not allow every person the opportunity to cast a ballot?

Argument opposed

Many companies are already taking it upon themselves to give their employees time off to vote, so this isn’t needed. Additionally, most states open their polls very early in the morning and keep them open until late in the evening on Election Day, giving people enough time to vote before or after their regular workdays.

I vote. It is inconvenient for me to always vote on Election Day so I early vote at my leisure. In my job, it would not be practical for me to leave, either. If people want to vote, there are plenty of opportunities to make it happen. Plus, not everyone works that close to their polling place.

No because those working flex or part time wouldn’t be included.

Make democracy great again by giving people the freedom to vote without having to choose between their vote and feeding their family.

Time Off to Vote Act - well I can see this is not going to happen, Republican are suppressing the vote and this would help all voters to get to vote! It should be a payed national holiday, not just 2 hrs time off, in most countries it is. How about we change the VA day to the first Tuesday in November to celibate why we can vote and be free! Also it was preposed by a democratic thinking all people should have the right to vote? It would make it harder for republican to rig the election. Not every state is the same for voting which needs to change! Either that vote by mail!

This is crucial. Fear of employment termination, missing out on needed income, are among many reasons why people don’t vote. Democracy needs an overhaul to draw more people into voting, and finally making it something important AND feasible for people. Beyond the 3 proposed measures, strict federal laws need to be set in place for politicians and their operatives who actively suppress voting rights, especially enacting laws that are proven to showcase their intent as engaging voter suppression as we’re seeing in FL and ND.

This runs along the lines of what I have been saying that employers should allow their employees to either come in late or leave early the voting day.

Just please give us the day off as a national holiday. I’m willing to accept this as a Plan B though.

Make it happen! We sent a man to the moon July 20, 1969. It is almost 2019! Almost 50 yrs later and our leaders are just now thinking about giving the American people paid time off to Vote? Something is wrong with this picture. Our leaders need to catch up, while they are at it! give us Living Wages. Our leaders make living wages. Doesn’t sound like to much to ask.

Bravo to anything that makes voting easier and more convenient. But I’m afraid it won’t pass as long the GOP is in control.

As a small business person, this would be damaging to small businesses. There’s plenty of time during the day to go vote, don’t hurt businesses over this.

I don’t think there should be an incentive to vote. A lot of people have the perspective that, “How does this benefit me?”, and the idea of voting without seeing immediate results or compensation for their actions makes it not as appealing. We’ve been granted a right that not everyone in the world is given, that should be the right incentive to us your voice and vote.
