Should the Debt Limit Be Eliminated?

Argument in favor

The debt limit puts America at risk of a budget crisis because lawmakers use it as an opportunity for partisan brinksmanship. It should be eliminated altogether to ensure the federal government can always access the money it needs to fund its obligations.

Keep The Debt Limit Constraints In Place To Control Spending While imperfect, the debt limit is at least a means of forcing Congress to confront the issue of runaway federal spending on a semi-regular basis. Without a debt limit, the federal government would spend itself into ruin. SneakyPete.......... 馃憤馃徎馃憤馃徎馃憤馃徎馃憤馃徎. 8.5.19..........

The federal debt limit is the public policy equivalent of an appendix; it serves no practical purpose and, if ruptured, it represents a grave threat to the country鈥檚 economic and fiscal health. Some argue the debt limit provides useful leverage to extract fiscal reforms that would be hard to enact otherwise. However, this is ultimately a 鈥榯rigger鈥 that must never be pulled, so it鈥檚 of limited value.

Congress salary should be eliminated until they do their job and balance the budget.

There are actually ignorant people on here saying yes cause it how republicans obstruct democrats?? Read a book morons, or better yet, read the constitution! Just like the rest of us the government needs to be able to run on a budget and stick to it. The problem is out of control spending on tax cuts for the rich and major corporations and excessive spending on the military. What's significant cuts to those things are budget could easily be balanced without having to cut any social programs. It would require politicians especially the GOP to get out of the pockets of the big donors and actually represent the electorate and their needs and wants. In other words we'd actually have to practice democracy. But I can control spending and borrowing is not the answer.

This is the time when our economy should allow us to pay down some debt. But for some reason we continue to increase debt. It鈥檚 time for a representative to do their job and work with in the boundaries.

It should be law that Congress cannot recess until a budget is passed every year.

Here鈥檚 why. With our elected members in office who have been in office for GENERATIONS now. 20,30,40 years they ALL sell their souls to stay in office. They all have sold our country out in some way or another. So a debt ceiling is ridiculous. Free healthcare for all. Free college free this and that. Seriously you鈥檙e selling our children and generations of Americans out to stay in POWER, you politicians are truly horrible people.

Warren Buffet is right: the debt limit IS a weapon of mass destruction. And it is only ever used to cut whatever programs benefit working families, never to cut corporate welfare.

It鈥檚 obvious some of these people have never worked in their life, but this is ridiculous... money comes from somewhere and in this case it鈥檚 red blooded Americans you are bleeding dry, this is blatant even for the government, when they can purpose a bill like this and not get laughed at off the hill then we have a serious problem. I would be all for removing the debt limit, HOWEVER, with a 18 trillion dollar plus deficit we need to be thinking about solutions for solvency before thinking of more ways to waste money. This should be old hand, what do we teach our kids? No money, that鈥檚 fine get a credit card, oh you have one and it鈥檚 maxed out? Get another one... where does this lunacy end?

No We do need fiscal discipline as the rest of the world won鈥檛 keep lending us money forever. Democrats: free stuff and open borders can鈥檛 work and no amount of blaming Trump or decrying 鈥淚ncome Inequality 鈥 will change the math. Build the wall, get people off welfare rolls and bring the country back to fiscal responsibly.

No. Congress can vote to raise, lower, or ignore it, but periodically they should hav to take some positive action one way or the other.

The debt limit is an archaic system to manage our country's fiscal obligation. The debt ceiling functions as a political and partisan cudgel rather than a tool to manage budget expenditures. In the 21st century, we cannot continue to be the country with 18th century parliamentary procedures. Relegate the debt ceiling to history.
