house Bill H.R. 2740

$982 Billion ‘Minibus’: FY2020 Funding for Defense, Health & Human Services, Education, Foreign Affairs, and More

Argument in favor

No bill is perfect, but this bill contains funding for many bipartisan priorities. It also advances progressive priorities like ending the so-called “global gag rule” that banned foreign aid dollars from going to groups that provide abortions overseas, and allowing “Dreamers” who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children to work for the federal government. Members of Congress need bigger office budgets to do their job effectively.

I provided my 'Yes' vote earlier under ClydeK. Still vote yes but remove restrictions on Hyde Admendment. I previously said this bill should be modified to remove a raise for Congress. That was before I was informed they have not been given one in 10 years. I might consider they are due one. I think i might be in favor of trying to do a "pay for performance" approach. Something that would consider things like: Bill's submitted, Bill's passed, Bill's voted on, etc. Also, make each member of Congress track how their constituents asked them to vote vs how the member actually voted.

I think there is more good than bad in the bill and at least keeps things funded. It is somewhat shameful that Congress folks get to "hide" what they truly stand for by lumping things into big amorphous blobs in highly packaged legislation.

Why can’t we get one bill, one vote? This bill has good and bad policies. We have to learn the art of compromise. Sometimes it’s ugly.

Argument opposed

Congress shouldn’t cram nearly $1 trillion in spending that would ordinarily be broken out into five bills into one package. This bill (which is subject to a veto threat) contains “poison pill” riders that continue the Hyde Amendment’s restrictions on federal funding for abortions domestically, allow foreign aid to go to groups that provide abortions overseas, and prevent the use of funds to build the border wall. Also, lawmakers shouldn’t vote to give themselves a raise.

I can do a point by point rejection of this ridiculousmegabill, but at a certain point it just becomes absurd. So no. The defense spending is out of control. monies being misdirected to stuff that we have no business wasting it on. There’s just too much. Stop combining bills. We shouldn’t have to accept the poison pills if you would passed individual clean bills.

There are several poison pills in this bill and never should Congress vote on a single bill containing nearly a trillion dollars in spending. Break it down and get the people's opinion on these issues before you vote.

This is dereliction of duty and fraud. Pass five separate appropriations bills. Also, release the names and details of all of the sexual harassment payouts to settle lawsuits against congressional members. This is our hard earned tax dollars being paid out to hide congressional misdeeds. RELEASE THIS INFO IMMEDIATELY!

I had to have my husband read this and he reads fine print in contracts, he stopped and said to much. I want DACA to go threw but not in this why can’t all this be separate as it should be?

Ah, not if this is the same bill that includes a $4,500 pay raise for our lawmakers... Another thing, where's all the fiscal responsibility that the GOP is always claiming to have??? I say scrap this bill and start over and let's simplify things and not make the bill thousands of pages long, so that you can all hide your pet projects inside those pages.

Omnibus bills a an abomination. It is a way for congress to cheat on its job by rolling many budgetary items into one bill that no one has time to read or study. Congress needs to do it's job and pass honest appropriations that also limit spending to what comes into the coffers. We cannot continue long on the path of deficit spending we are now on.
