house Bill H.R. 268

Should Congress Approve $13 Billion in Disaster Relief?

Argument in favor

Congress needs to act quickly to approve this $13 billion disaster relief package that will help federal agencies, states and territories, and individual Americans rebuild from natural disasters in 2018 and 2019.

I call my representatives everyday. The government needs to be reopened immediately. People are hurting. My son is in the Coast Guard and not getting paid. This is ridiculous. The wall should not be tied to people getting paid.

These workers aren't furloughed because of a lack of work. It is because Mr. Trump is punishing these workers in order to force congress to bow down and build his wall. It looks as if we the people are the only adults in the room. It's time for congress to do the will of the people rather than bow down to the presidents spoiled brat tantrums.

They should reopen the government today. Why can McConnell hold everything up. Time for a revolt in the Senate

Argument opposed

While the federal government should provide disaster relief, $13 billion is too much at a time when other priorities go underfunded. Alternatively, the federal government should get out of the disaster relief business except for repairing federal properties.

Build that wall! Fund the wall, $5 Billion is NOTHING to Congressional spending, then open government.

If you allow Americans just to keep their own money they earn, there would be no need for federal government charity. Allow states to provide help where needed. It’s their job. This is not a federal government issue.

Border Security FIRST. Then fund the government. The failing Democrats are loosing this fake shutdown. Democrats can’t negotiate or legislate. This party is imploding as I type this. The fake Russian narrative peddled by the Dims and their boot lickers in the MSM is soon to implode on them. 2020 Is already lost. LMAO.

Disaster relief is necessary. Fix flint and PR. Think of this Pennsylvania is a common wealth such as Puerto Rico. If what happened their happened in Philadelphia, the city would be up and running. Flint, filthy water flowing and causing all kinds of illness. We need to overhaul their grids, upgrade water systems. Invest in renewable energy

If it was an emergency at the border, or you were really worried about the borders, immigration officials and employees, nor the Coast Guard would not be working without pay or furloughed! A hoax is a hoax! Open the government and pay its employees! Hash egos out without using American employees as pawns!

The affected states should manage their own disaster relief.

Republicans are responsible for this mess. They failed to keep the government open when they failed to pass legislation before their term was up. This shutdown stems from failure to lead. The blame lid on Trump and McConnell while they play political games with people’s livelihoods. Open the damn government.

Give it time. The effects of this shutdown will be at ALL of our doors, and the loyal Trump followers will finally feel the pain of his tactics. Let’s see how MAGA they will be when they can’t buy milk or medicine for their babies. Suddenly holding out for a wall that will never be built won’t be what they encourage. They’ll fold like a house of cards when their personal household is out of money.

It’s interesting to note that the majority of the comments by Trump supporters on this question seem to see no need for the departments and employees affected. Interesting when the areas most affected have to do with security. If their advice were to be followed the TSA, Coast Guard, Border Patrol, Air Traffic Control, and similar jobs would be abolished. This is what rank and file Republicans are supporting.

Govt employee, had to work every day despite shutdown! No pay, got bonus late cause payroll messed up then now they pulled the money back and now I got bank fees due to negative balance. Said bonus would have to paid after shutdown since they can’t pay ANYTHING during shutdown. 5 kids, no pay, but yet I’ve got to work! Yea - open the freaking govt!!!!! Pathetic! Paid my bonus this year late off last year money but yet they have to pull it back - B. S. This is sad! Govt shut down should not impact hardworking employees having to work everyday to support their mission. Not to mention on call 24/7 working hard = no pay! Sux

The Admiral in charge of the Coast Guard has said for the first time in our Nation’s history service members aren’t being paid. Any rep not voting to reopen the government now is guilty of treason.

The Dems Need to Get Off The Beaches & Back to Washington To Work I’m in strong support of Congress needing to act quickly to approve this $12 billion disaster relief package that will help federal agencies, states, and individual Americans rebuild from 2018’s natural disasters. It also wisely funds projects aimed at mitigating the impact of future natural disasters. SneakyPete..... 🤔👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤔..... 1*15*19.....

As usual these expiring tax provisions hit the poor and minority’s the hardest. IMHO there should be no reason to keep having to extend these provisions and they should be made permanent. If this is not going to happen extend them indefinitely as we know for a fact more natural disasters are likely effects of climate change.
