house Bill H.R. 2500

House Democrats’ $733 Billion Defense Authorization Bill for FY2020

Argument in favor

This bill would authorize funding for many bipartisan priorities with regard to defense policy, from providing troops with a 3.1% pay raise and funding the acquisition of key technologies, to strengthening alliances against threats around the world. It also would prevent the wasteful diversion of defense dollars to building a wall, fence, or other barrier along the Southern border, which undermines military readiness.

This is still way too much for the war machine. We must put an end to this waste of resources and defrauding of taxpayers.

Always take care of the military. But use caution with how the funds are used. No wall.

Argument opposed

This bill falls short of authorizing the funding needed to restore military readiness in response to threats from Russia, China, and North Korea. It also threatens to spoil the spirit of bipartisanship that has enabled the adoption of 58 consecutive NDAAs by Congress by including Democratic riders allowing the transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to the U.S., inhibiting nuclear weapons programs, and blocking border security activities.

Cut that amount in half and quadruple the spending for veterans healthcare. We already spend as much on our military as the next 20 countries combined. End no-bid military contracts to reduce their overhead, close unnecessary bases, and stop authorizing unjust military actions.

The Us military is NOT engaged in "defense," but in OFFENSE, aka "intervention" in foreign countries.

I do not care about the border implications of this defense spending bill. I do care that our defense budget has been bloated too much. Cutting defense spending in half and reestablishing the methods defense contracts are conducted would provide armed forces with a realistic budget. The current system is wasteful and unnecessary. The USA does not need to spend as much as we do on our military when the next five nations combined (most are allies) don’t even come close to our level of spending on defense. Please attempt to provide the pentagon with an appropriate sized budget, instead of the current blank check method.

Stop with this excessive budget!!! Invest this money in infrastructure and rebuilding America. Give up some of our military bases. Start shrinking our military outposts and stop getting involved in every country to gain their natural resources. Stop.

The defense spending of US is now more than China, France, India, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Great Britain, and Germany COMBINED! Why are we spending at this rate, rather than truly making NATO an alliance and depending upon our allies for part of the defense? It is time to cut back on the military spending - it is just too much!! It is about 4-1/2% of our total!!

We spend too much on military expenditures, and engage in wars not authorized by the United Nations. We need to scale back the military industrial complex, and stop being a global police force.

I am 💯 % behind a raise for the Military, but not just for active duty but it’s been decades since retirees have received across the board pay raise. The little cost of living amount is a slap in the face of these Veterans for their long years of service.

It is so unnecessary to fund the military so much. We aren’t going to war and we already have one of the best militaries in the world. There are many more problems we must focus on and fund instead, not just military.

We spend too much on defense, more than the next 10 countries combined. It forsn’t make the world safer. It makes the military-industrial complex richer, hastens climate change (since the military is one of the biggest polluters of the environment), and takes needed money from domestic programs.

We spend way too much on defense (offense more accurately). This should be cut by a very bare minimum of 33%

Most of that money is spent here in the US on civilian employment. That means jobs for many many people.

How can they even ask for that with a straight face? That is a $75 billion increase. The increase alone is more than Russia spends in a year on defense. That amount, inflation adjusted, is more than Nazzi Germany spent during the height of WW2. It is a 5X increase in military spending in my lifetime. That level of spending is a car payment for every fucking citizen in the country! WHY? If our military efforts around the world are designed to make the world safer then why do we keep paying more and more and more? When does it end? This is insane and inane.
