house Bill H.R. 2358

Should Congress Create a 21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps to Fight Unemployment & Protect the Environment?

Argument in favor

A new Civilian Conservation Corps would combat unemployment and allow for the completion of numerous public works projects like those accomplished by the original CCC during the Great Depression.

National service should be required of all citizens. This would help to provide another opportunity to serve. Personally, I believe in military service for everyone. It changes the national attitude toward armed conflicts. Saw this in Vietnam and then after when there was only the lottery, then nothing. Fewer Chicken Hawks when you or your son or brother (or sister) have to go to the front.

While the idea of a new CCC I believe it needs to be expanded beyond the 1930’s scope of only National Parks and trails etc. While unemployment is low there are many current problems such as infrastructure, agriculture, inner city repair, medical and elderly in-home services etc that need manpower. Low unemployment will not last forever and to find and train people is not a short process Additionally the President and Congress should not be included in the day-to-day operations as they are not qualified with a single agency being required for management and implementation

The original CCC build a great many of the National Park infrastructures. It was a great program. Something like that today would be a asset if used for that same purpose. Conservation of our natural resources.

Argument opposed

Massive public works programs like a new version of the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps quickly become an accountable waste of taxpayer dollars. There’s no need for a CCC at this time.

If we were suffering from 30% unemployment than maybe yeah, but since we are at record lows for unemployment, we do not need to be wasting taxpayer money every fiscal year on a program that costs billions a year.

This is not needed and will just create more government employees. Our government needs to make cuts not increase jobs. If you want to help the environment get the government out of the way.

I love the idea of this bill and it was hard to choose but I would have to say nay simply because it isn’t currently needed. We could use that money for other agencies, departments, etc. Plus, that money would end up going to waste as currently, unemployment rates are very low.

I think this would be a great way to help people have a job, learn a skill, and improve our country. FDR did this and we still see the results at parks. Win, win

Although I can see Mitch’s axe marks on this already as he’s never done an altruistic thing in his life, I’ll get behind the creation of a new CCC for the purposes of protecting the environment and assisting the unemployed and under employed. It is my feeling this would especially assist those in rural areas where meaningful jobs are not plentiful and Dairy Queen has all the employees it needs. In addition to teaching valuable hands on skills, these jobs would help make up for some of the drastic cuts made to our Forest Services and could clear some of the tremendously damaged drought and beetle killed forests which are fueling these vast wildfires sweeping states across the country. This has 100% of my support.

Great idea- provides: a focus on contributing to the common good, a public service effort to mitigate the impact of climate change, and a public awareness/involvement in protecting our planet. Also, it provides a less-regimented environment for returning vets having difficulty finding work, to ease the transition into the general workforce as well as a more-regimented environment for grads who cannot find meaningful work to get used to working in a more structured environment. It would also help people coming out of prison for non-violent crimes like growing marijuana find meaningful work. Positive on all counts.

There are plenty of Americans out there who are underemployed, working part time when they’d want to work full time, and who have just simply given up looking for work that would benefit enormously from this kind of program. It’s absurd to dismiss this bill by saying there’s low unemployment when you’re only looking at the official U3 unemployment rate. This proposal should be a key portion of the Green New Deal!

It’s time. People NEED 1 JOB THAT PAYS ENOUGH TO MEET EXPENSES INCLUDING HEALTHCARE. AMERICANS NEED INFRASTRUCTURE RENOVATIONS WHICH THE REPUBLICANS & Trump ARE NOT INTERESTED IN BECAUSE IT DOES NOT FILL THEIR POCKETS OR THE COURTS THEY ARE SO FOCUSED ON FILLING. We are headed to destructions the Republican Senate DOES NOT CARE & TRUMP IS SUCH A BABY HE WONT DO ANYTHING TO HELP THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT.
