Food stamps shouldn't be going towards pot, it should be going towards more essential needs.

Food stamps are for food. You can't buy any other non food item with this why should they with this.

Argument opposed

It is impossible to use SNAP benefits to purchase legal marijuana (see below). As TANF funds provide cash, regulation would be difficult.

No drug dealers accept food stamps, and one cannot use SNAP to pay for cannabis in legal states. Passing unnecessary legislation to fight a statistically non-existent problem.

Of course, welfare shouldn't be used to buy pot, however this bill would attempt to deter a CASH purchase of pot. See what a can of worms that opens? No, thank you. Just provide welfare on an electronic card only. Solved.

The cost of drug testing would fall exceed the cost of food stamps to pot users. Also, only the children of these pot users would suffer. Is that what we want? to starve children?

Media:

The Denver Post: Fake Report about Colorado Pot Shops, Food Stamps, Creates Havoc

MediaMatters: Fox Pretends Coloradans Can Buy Pot with Food Stamps

Snopes: Food Stamps for Pot

Of Note:

-Much of the furor over this issue originates from a single, satirical article published by political satire web publication the National Report. The story was picked up by numerous social media sites, many of which believed the story to be genuine. TV affiliate Fox31 Denver ran a piece in February 2014 implying Colorado welfare recipients were using funds from assistance programs to purchase marijuana. In regard to TANF, where cash assistance is provided, this is possible. In regard to Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, it is not.

AKA

No Welfare for Weed Act of 2015

Official Title

To amend the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to prohibit the use of benefits to purchase marijuana products, to amend part A of title IV of the Social Security Act to prohibit assistance provided under the program of block grants to States for temporary assistance for needy families from being accessed through the use of an electronic benefit transfer card at any store that offers marijuana for sale, and for other purposes.

If there is even a remote chance food assistance funding could be misused to purchase legal marijuana, we must step in to prevent it now. If there is a way to manipulate the system, someone will certainly find it. Let's take appropriate precautions now.

Unless you make it impossible for SNAP recipients to get much needed cash there is no way to enforce this.

With marijuana legalization sweeping the country, this shouldn't even be an issue. How is something that is becoming legalized going to negatively affect your access to benefits?
