house Bill H.R. 2206

Should Congress Create a 21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps to Fight Unemployment & Protect the Environment?

Argument in favor

A new Civilian Conservation Corps would combat unemployment and allow for the completion of numerous public works projects like those accomplished by the original CCC during the Great Depression.

This is something every republican should support. If you hate handouts, then you should be for people being put to work rather than just receiving an unemployment check. The government is paying the money anyway, why not get some value out of it by putting people to work while they are in transition.

I encourage support of this bill because historically, civilian corps like this have proved to be a to boon our natural resources, infrastructure, public spaces, and of course, employment numbers. Provided that the new CCC doesn't become a backdoor to subjugating those in public assistance, and remains an optional, and varied form of employment, we are unlikely to go wrong giving good women and men an opportunity to be gainfully employed, while serving our country.

I know people who went into the military because it was their only choice for guaranteed employment and benefits. This is an alternative for those who; want to improve our country at home, are pacifists, or might not qualify for the military due to disabilities.

Argument opposed

Massive public works programs like a new version of the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps quickly become an accountable waste of taxpayer dollars. There’s no need for a CCC at this time.

Trying to get those college grads off the street? While I see a great heart to recommend this as a option for unemployment I question a motive. With National employment is a 4.3%, where are these unemployed? Not even the homeless seem interested. I am pretty sure the farmers are looking for pickers or field harvesters, the jobs illegals seek for employment. Are these unemployed the same individuals on food stamps or living in public housing?

What?? No! A government department of employing people is useless! Think about it for half a second and you'll realize that every dollar that goes toward tax-funded jobs comes from pulling that dollar OUT of NON-tax-funded jobs! You're not adding employment, you're just removing it from the private sector and putting it in the public sector. Just get out of the way and let the only economic engine that has ever lifted the mass of humanity out of grinding poverty - the free market - do what it does best!

The idea of creating a new agency to reduce unemployment, however well-intentioned, will not lead to a sustainable, long-term economic solution. Instead, it will result in unnecessary public works projects that will only get approved to keep workers employed. Although the idea of shiny new infrastructure and lowered unemployment may sound appealing, the reality is that said employment will, in all likelihood, be temporary.

My father was a poor boy in Southern Missouri in a home with no money for shoes. Through the Conservation Corps, he was able to support his family as well as himself with dignity, and was always proud of the work he did. Going to Sequoia National Forest, also work of the Conservation Corps, it is evident that the spectacular beauty available to us all is the legacy of a government by, for and about the people of the United States of America. Repairing the dangerous infrastructure, having pay for work, having housing for homeless people, this is a solution to so many insoluble problems, it is an absolute necessity for our wonderful country and people. Conservation Corps, the solution to so much, yes, please.

[As much as it pains me to say it, I'm inclined to support this bill, PROVIDED they don't sneak in ways to give any jobs that are created to illegal aliens, or add other undesirable amendments. The bill is only 7 pages long, and I haven't read it yet, but I fully intend to read it! I'm wondering why there have been no Republicans willing to cosponsor this bill.] H.R.2206 - 21st Century Civilian Conservation Corps Act Official Title: To authorize the President to reestablish the Civilian Conservation Corps as a means of providing gainful employment to unemployed and underemployed citizens of the United States through the performance of useful public work, and for other purposes. Yes, I support this. It is a proven strategy that has worked in the past. There is work to be done and citizens who need both the financial relief and the dignity work brings. The focus in this nation needs to be shifted from the current free markets and business first priorities and refocused instead on the very real needs of the people. What I'd really like to see is something like the Humphrey-Hawkins Act of the seventies in its original form as intended by the authors and before the political tooth pulling that left it a full employment plan in name only by the time it was passed in 1978. To quote the fiery words of the great statesman Hubert H. Humphrey in 1976 "If the greatest free nation in the history of mankind has to get down on its knees in fear of something as abstract and as arbitrary as these so called free market forces, well then, we're through. We might just as well haul down the flag, lock up the capital, go home, and admit that we don't have the courage or the imagination to govern ourselves." Regrettably, that is pretty much where we find ourselves today. We are not a government of and for the people, but rather one in which our so called representatives neglect our needs in order to serve as lackeys for corporations and the wealthy elite while giving little thought to the concerns of everyday citizens. Passing this bill could improve the nation's badly deteriorating infrastructure while providing much needed employment for those who are hurting from unemployment. That's a win/win.

Just a great idea. With all the money wasted in DC, this is something a tax payer can truly get behind.

As long as the infrastructure is modernized and people learn proper 21st century skills. Do not use it as an almost slave labor force. Pay people a living wage and get the projects done without a bloated budget. College is not for everyone and with trade schools closing all over the place this is a great way to apprentice and learn by doing.

Our infrastructure needs urgent repair and work and many of our citizens need employment. Let's do what Roosevelt did to lift this country from the Depression.

Just returned from Norway where every young adult had to serve one year after graduation in either the military or some other effort to support the country. It would provide a buy-in to the country, especially if no one could buy their way out.

THESE NUT CASES THAT BELIEVE THE EMPLOYMENT IS ACTUALLY AT 4.3 % PROBABLY THINK THE GDP IS ACTUALLY AT 2% TOO !!!! KEEP SIPPING THAT COOL AID KIDS !!! DON'T TROUBLE YOURSELVES WITH THE TRUTH !! THEY DON'T REALIZE THAT THE PREDATORY CAPITALISM WE ARE EXPERIENCING NOW, WITH ITS ACCOMPANYING INTERNATIONAL MONOPOLIES, WON'T DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN EAT UP EVERYONES DISCRETIONARY SPENDING, AND THEN ALL OUR JOBS, FROM AUTOMATION, AND SPIT OUT THE BONES !!!! THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE REALITIES OF JOB LOSS AS IT IS IN THE 21st CENTURY !!! GOOD LIVING WAGE JOBS ARE NOT COMING BACK !! I'M SORRY ABOUT THE BAD NEWS, BUT, FOR WARNED IS FOR ARMED!!!AUTOMATION IS WHAT IS KILLING THE JOB MARKET !!! THE MESSAGE IS BEING KEPT FROM THE PUBLIC AT LARGE BY A FRAUDULENT WALL STREET BECAUSE PUBLIC FAITH IN OUR ECONOMY IS THE ONLY GLUE HOLDING THE ECONOMY TOGETHER THESE DAYS. WALL STREETERS TALK ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME BUT ONLY IN TECHNICAL ECONOMIC TERMS ( LINGO ) AND ON ECONOMICS ONLY NEWS AGENCIES !!!! UNLESS YOU FOLLOW TECHNICAL ECONOMIC NEWS AND UNDERSTAND THEIR SHOP TALK YOU DON'T HEAR ABOUT IT !!!!! EDUCATE YOURSELVES !!! DO NOT RELY ON THE MARKET PLACE TO LAY IT OUT FOR YOU. THEY WON'T, THEY NEED A COMPLIANT PUBLIC TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF US AS LONG AS POSSIBLE !! LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF ECONOMICS AND FOLLOW THE MONEY NOT THE NEWS AGENCIES, RIGHTIES OR LEFTIES!!!!! NEITHER ONE ARE TELLING THE WHOLE TRUTH !! THEY ARE DOING THAT TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC CONFIDENCE THAT IS HOLDING OUR ECONOMY TOGETHER. FOLLOW THE MONEY !!! WHERE THE BIG MONEY INTERESTS PUT THEIR MONEY IS NO LIE !!
